The Deluxe software to do your taxes are fine. It does not have a lot of access to your stocks, etc. information and you have to add them in yourself. It can get confusing because of the complexities of the holdings. Other than that it's basic. Next year I'll do them myself and save money.
I have used this brand and version of software for years. I used to buy the disk and now I am compelled to download the software. I like how it works and it updates. Makes doing the taxes simple and quick. The back end resources are great.
I used H&R deluxe plus state again this year to calculate federal and Ohio returns. Filed Federal using H&R free electronic option, but printed out and filed Ohio return manually. We took a lump sum pension distribution credit in a prior year, so we’re not eligible for Ohio joint filing credit going forward. H&R software did not pick this situation up so my return got flagged and was held up by the IRS for 4 months until I called to get it resolved. Ohio needs to simplify their complex tax code, but H&R should have flagged this situation and handled the calculations regardless.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I don’t know if the IRS doesn’t have its act together with regard to being ready for people to file. The law states that employers, financial institutions, etc. are to have their year end tax data sent to clients by January 31. H&R Block gives an advice that the ‘final’ version of the release is not ready. Meanwhile, February turns into March and still not ready. That is ridiculous. The final version should be ready by the end of the first week in February. There is no reason to drag it out passed that timeframe. Unsure if TurboTax has this issue. I might try them next year.
I have always used Turbotax...and I made the mistake of using H & R Block tax cut software. Never again!!!!
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

When a return is reopened, it should open exactly where the last session ended. There should be a bookmark function so a section or specific entry can be revisited. There should be a recap of the various entries actually used in the submitted return calculations. When the last year return is carried into this year, there should be a checklist of what will be required this year.
