One Problem This Year

Have used H&R Block software for the past five years and have always been extremely happy with it but this year ran into a problems with IRA distributions defaulting to line 53A (on Form 5329) instead of offering 53A or 53b. The correct choice for me was 53b but it took me quite a while to figure out where my tax penalty was coming from.
Suggest you look into this so that others will not have to spend time to determine where the problem came from.

I bought the Deluxe version and wished I had purchased Premium so I could get live support for questions I had. I thought I had seen somewhere in the past that I could purchase an upgrade to get tax prep support but couldn’t find any way to do that. Other than that I was pleased with the ease of using the software.

The software is fine and does what it says it will do. But why do Americans put up with this crazy system? Why are we put thru this wringer every year? We should look at other countries with simplified tax filing systems and adopt the best approach.

I had a problem trying to add a 1099-B form for my spouse, it was for a retirement rollover of company stock that was cashed out by the employer,. My spouse deposited their check last Spring to her IRA. When trying to install a new form 1099-B, the new form popped-up with my name & SSN, not my spouse. The person in Software Support Team at 1-888-482-9288 restated my question, then asked me if I was online. And yes, i was online. The HRB expert quickly knew what to do... she said, , click on Help Center, type-in 1099-B rollover, chose the 3rd of 6 responses, and there it was... And explanation covering the 1099-B & 1099-R, stating that the 1099-R was first & required, but the I did not need to add the 1099-B as in this case, it wasn't required. , I spent hours on my own the previous few days without success.
