I have used H&R Block for years and it has been a great help in dealing with complicated tax filing. One still has to assemble all necessary W-2s, 1099s, etc. and input the data, but the software works it all out, does needed computations, and warns about any discrepancies or need for additional info. I also like the guarantee of personal representation in case of an audit
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund

Great for most things but having to validate each imported broker transaction is PAINFUL! Especially since the interface takes you back to the top of the list EVERY TIME.
It defeats the purpose of impoting those transactions if I have to manually confirm every one in such a clunky innterface…

I had a problem with electronically filed state return for Virginia. While my copy showed that I had checked the box for the addional senior exemption, the state claimed that the electonically filed return did not include the exemption.

I’ve been using this tax software for many years without any issues. My only complaint occurred this year when I cashed in some old savings bonds. The software led me to believe I could deduct the interest income if I contributed to a 529 college savings plan. After a lengthy process of entering the bond serial number, purchase and sale date I learned the interest couldn’t be reduced. This plan is for my three grandchildren and it’s only available for dependents listed on the that form. They could have easily identified the requirements before I needlessly researched and entered the information. Not good!
