Greedy Practices

I bought this software last year and it worked fine. Little to no issues. However, now I'm trying to do my taxes for this year and it's telling me I need to purchase the 2024 software again in full price in order to view my return. They do not have it stored on their website and my hard drive crashed with my copy. Evidently, you are supposed to pay extra to be able to access your return for "up to two years" in the future. This is pretty disappointing from what I thought was a reputable tax preparation company. So now, because H&R block is greedy, I have to request a transcript from the IRS and I'm not going to be able to autofill my information onto my return for this year.
I will NOT be using this service again.

I have used this program for over 10 years and found it to be adequate for most circumstances. Each time I find anything out of the ordinary however, the help features of the program aren’t much help and the new AI “Help” isn’t any better. As an example, I have spent a great deal of time figuring out where to enter unusual types of income, or entered numbers under some category only to find another possibility further along in the interview that may (or may not) be a better fit and then have to backtrack and reanalyze proper placement. The help function needs help.

The flow was good. But you have to have a significant amount of knowledge about which sectins you need to select and fill in. I struggled with a type of income recorded on a 1099-NUC form that is handled differently in two different locations. Many options required for response have only generic descriptions with not much helpful information. Some changes this year, like an increase in state tax related deductions was hidden in the form and not clearly defined. Also, many credits or adjustments are confusing and only generally defined, pointing to tax forms for more details.

Cons: Time consuming
