For me anyway, there were a couple of places that did not seem to work correctly, such as when I tried to enter a 2nd source of retirement income (IRA source) the software would not let me inter it, so I had to add the amount to the first source of income. Also the forms I need for credit for property tax are not listed.
Couldn't install from disk, customer support 2 times over 3 hours. Got it installed, then wouldn't transmit to their site, blaming my ISP. Rebooted modem uninstall Mcaffee, disable firewall...all for nothing. One day it just decided to work. Hallelujah. PIA. 1st year with trouble.
Pros: Maximizes refund
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
I've been using it for a few years now. They've gutted some of the features that made it better (free conversation with a tax professional), and the state programs are pretty bad (they have very little guidance). The federal does the job fairly effectively and has only a few bugs. Watch out to see what you get for the price - they charge separately for state efile.
I have used Block Deluxe for a number of years. Almost every year I ask myself why.
This year and last the software failed me by requiring that I find, print and fill out a form in order to use the annualized method to avoid a penalty with my Massachusetts taxes. The result was that I couldn't efile my Massachusetts return.
Another time, the IRS sent me a notice that I was missing a crucial form when reporting the sale of a house. Block should have noticed this.
I am constantly baffled by the language used to explain data entries. It's as bad as or worse than the IRS's publications. Block should test their explanations with people who do taxes once a year. Improvements are needed. For most of us it no longer is important to find the most deductions - the standard deduction is enough. Focus your attention on other aspects of the software. The one good thing I can say about the software is that I haven't found any calculation errors.
