I've both used tax software in the past & used online forms (at IRS & state website) and did OK with both. But now our situations have changed and it's just easier to use purchased software. Of the brands I've used in the past, H&R Block is towards the top.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Fast

Though the federal tax return was good as always the state forms are lacking. For the cost of adding the state forms they 100% lack the same level of interview and explanation, you are left to figure out many values hoping you are doing it right.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Hard to prepare

One glaring inaccuracy

Except for one glaring issue, your tax software is accurate and easy to use. But it is ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT in one area and I pointed this out 12 months ago and it is still not fixed. I tried to send emails explaining the issue, but doubt anyone read them. Of course you cannot talk to a person on the phone, and dingleberry AI is useless to talk to. In a nutshell, Indiana tax software screws things up. There is a difference in Indiana between a 529 EDUCATION savings account and a 529 ABLE Savings account. Both are eligible for a tax credit. When doing the interview, the software correctly differentiates between these two, and asks for account numbers. Great! Then on the final accuracy review, it squawks at me saying the account number for the ABLE account is not correct, and it says "Account numbers for 529 SAVINGS accounts must begin with 61 or 62". That may be true but has no bearing on account numbers for 529ABLE accounts. And of course it will not let me file my return electronically with this 'error' when in fact, there is no error. FIX THIS for 2026 tax year!
