I have used H&R Block for about two decades. This year was 50 miles of rough road. I was doing my granddaughter's taxes She is covered under her father's health plan. He got a 1095A. I repeatedly tried to learn how to handle it in the H&R Block program. The answers were all over the place. They ranged from H&R Block cannot handle a allocation to later after I had to go outside a pay someone to refile everything....to yes H&R Block can do it. I have no idea of what is reality. I do know that I had to switch to TurboTax as they could handle it. I found the TurboTax product much harder to navigate but at least after over 10 hours of trying to sort it out....we were able to file. Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

Program has significant flaws in reacting to direct entries to tax forms. Program is centered around the questionnaires at the beginning of the return preparation process. However, the questionnaires entail a lot of wasted time and irrelevant requests so direct entries generally are more efficient for the experienced user. But because of the program's structure, a great deal of manual work and even arithmetic are needed to complete the returns. And the updating of linked forms isn't always reliable.

In general, it's a good stand-alone product. However, it didn't carry a lot of my data from the prior year as it should and the data that it did carry had errors in it. It's also terribly expensive to do the state returns one by one. It also doesn't import the stock sale data individually; it's in bulk categories. The IRS then thinks you didn't report the individual sales and you have to address the IRS complaint letters. Lastly, it doesn't tell you which state returns can't be filed electronically (at another additional fee, of course) before purchase, so you still may have to print the returns on paper and mail them, which defeats some of the purpose of using their software.
Pros: Maximizes refund
Cons: Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It works, and it's not from Intuit, evil leader of the efforts to keep taxes complicated and prevent the IRS from offering direct filing. Charging for state access is sleazy. The user interface has not been updated in years.
