Some what short on state return
on April 13, 2025

The Alabama return wanted a state ID number that was not included on the 1099 R from US Civil Service . It would not let me file electronically without it. Also the Alabama return would not automatically calculate that my Civil Service was not taxable in Alabama. It also didn’t know how much of my IRA was deductible. Turbo tax does that automatically depending on your state.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Guidance Common Forms - Farm Form Difficult

I like the format and guidance that H&R Block software provides. The guidance got me through most of the common entries (i.e. interest, dividends, capital gains); however, I did have an issue with filling out the farm rental income form. A grayed out entry was difficult to determine what I needed to do and the program would not allow me to submit my 1040 with a forced entry. I finally figured it out after right clicking on the grayed out entry to fill out another form.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Time consuming

The product is great for simple, straightforward returns. If you are not involved with RMD’s, Qcd’s, and other things that require more than a basic understanding of tax law and the forms that make little sense with their instructions, then use it. Else, find a CPA that has a good reputation.

The program is overall very easy to use and import the information from the previous year. This year however it did not include all the forms I needed so I had to download some from IRS.gov and figure out the instructions. I also couldn’t get free help, or second look, from a local HRBlock office like I did in a previous year.
