I've used H&R Block software for almost 20 years now, starting with TaxCut, and I'e been very pleased with it! I The software is very easy to use and provides good information if you have questions or just want to double check a line item.

Not the best documentation

I tried to e-file a return and it kept getting rejected because the PIN did not match. The software gave no information on what pin it is trying to match against. Nor did it say what to do if a prior return was not filed. Needs to be improved.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Federal worked better than state for me.

The only issue I experienced with the Federal program was that I had some difficulty importing my W2 data. I entered in my name and address, then it was able to import, but then required that I enter in several W2 values to confirm that it was correct. I suspect the issue was that last year's data had "Pl" instead of "Place" in my street address.
I had more issues with my State return, although my situation is somewhat abnormal. I live in Indiana, but work in Kentucky and the locality where I work taxes me, which is offset against county taxes where I live using 3 calculations on a schedule and choosing the least amount. I completed my State tax return, and the program said there were no issues, until I tried to e-file. Then it said there was an issue, but didn't direct me where to resolve it, so I ended up filing my State return via certified mail, which is cheaper than e-filing (which, as I side-rant, I really don't understand because someone must have to spend more time entering data from a paper return than simply importing digital data, so why would it cost more?). I didn't have issues last year, but I did this one, so I'd probably still recommend H&R Block, although I expect it'll take longer to get my State refund than it should.
