I have been using the H&R Block Tax Cut software since 2003! It is very user friendly, and have taught several friends how to use it to prepare their own personal income tax return. I love it, and would not consider switching to any other tax software.
I've used this software for 10+ years and the user inferface has not changed (which I guess could be considered a good or bad thing, but I like the consistency). Filing electronically works fine, no issues at all.
I've used HR Block for a long time. It's familiar. It does the job. Tax law is extremely complicated. This software helps simplify things, but it is still complicated to use. It's made to walk you through the process, but it is overly complicated to go back to complete something you've skipped or verify information you've put in. There are a few places where it said, "You have to fill out this form yourself." What? Isn't that why I bought this software? Then the form it gave me to fill out was disabled so I couldn't fill it out. (Something about health care insurance rebate.) There are a couple of places it says, "Let's look at XYZ..." Then it says, "We have all the information we need." Why tell me this, just skip it. So it's annoying, but it's ok. It's more annoying because I know that HRBlock lobbies congress to keep the tax laws complicated and fights any simple government tools.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents
I think Block has made this a miserable experience so that they can drive customers to their paid services. There is no reason to have an expensive complex program like this for most people. For families with multiple earners, there should be a simple way to generate a return with only a W2 or 1099s for kids (example). This was much more polished when it was TaxCut. Same for multistate. The charge for the 2nd or more state return is more than buying a whole 2nd Deluxe+State program. They do this to intimidate you when you're trying to do finish up and need that and figure that you'll pay the ridiculous full list MSRP for just state add-in. The PDF scan of online W2's work for some so you have to check each entry carefully. For 3 years running, I've gotten "SS Tips" entries that are non-existent on my W-2s, and from more than one employer. Trying to clear "Data verifications" is a circular task and frustrating. I really hope the federal pilot Freefile program expands to all the states.
