I have used TurboTax previously and wanted to try H&R Block thinking it would not much difference in tax software. Operational-wise, they both do the income tax but H&R is not user-friendly in explaining tax situations in layman's terms. It explains more like a CPA. It makes you enter information over and over again such as bank account information for your refund. It doesn't allow you to click to solve the problem on the spot but makes you manually go to the error section. It lacks the smarts to tell what is wrong. There are lots of little nuances that make you crazy. I am not planning to use H&R again even though it costs slightly less than TurboTax.
Pros: Easy to import documents
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It failed when trying to efile on 15th. Says software problem. Apologized but still showing error yet taxes were efile. That was very very annoying

I bought the program in advance and continued to get sales offers! After a while it got kind of old! Had some issues the print function not printing all the pages properly for my records! About the 3rd time around it finally came out ok and had a 1040 tax return for seniors at the top of the form! Have never seen this before or heard of it! I’m still not sure what was going on but was glad it finally printed the forms correctly!
Pros: Maximizes refund

I've been using H&R Block software and its predecessor Tax Cut ever since 1997. At that time I had shares in a limited partnership and the K-1 forms they send you are a mess because there are many types of limited partnerships. Doing taxes my self was a pain in the neck. The software would ask me if there was an entry on what lines on the form and do all the work for me. What used to take hours was reduced to minutes. I've been buying the software ever since.
