The product is good but I need it to support older versions of the MacBook Pro. I do not want to buy another MacBook just to do my annual taxes. It’s been working the last two years by bypassing the warnings
Pros: Fast
I would recommend this to a friend!

Clunky and frustrating

It works mostly, but you have to arm wrestle with it a bit too much. It saves some time and much of the hassle of tracking the information from the various forms that you receive (such as 1099s), but introduces its own headaches.
HOWEVER, the information that the software imports for Schedule D is NOT imported correctly. This software inexplicably appends many, many zeroes (like a dozen) onto the end of the QUANTITY field - and it consequently truncates either the CUSIP or SYMBOL field because the software data field reaches its character limit!! So you then have to go back to EVERY SINGLE LINE ITEM and correct the CUSIP or SYMBOL by deleting the extraneous zeroes and adding the truncated characters. What a joke. On a positive note, at least it imports every item.
The electronic form that the software uses to correct the above situation is not exactly straightforward. The electronic form mimics the actual hard copy IRS form (why?), and uses a kind of 'next page' feature that is not that obvious. Data entry should not be done that way. Why doesn't it simply present all of the items from each 1099 in a list for you to edit, then report it to the IRS form fields in the background? Clunky. And this problem would go away if they fixed the above appending/truncating problem.
I filed the Pennsylvania state return. After I was completely done with ALL data entry, ALL checks and validations, and at about the very last step of the entire electronic submission process, the software then told me that I needed to attach some PDFs because the state requires it. The exact description was something like: "Pennsylvania Wage Statement, Sec II Forms". What the hey is that?? It took me all kinds of internet searching to finally figure out that they were referring to my 1099-R or 1099-INT. Why in the HEY can't the software just say that!? Also, why did the software wait until the very end of the entire process before telling me that? Why doesn't the software inform you that Pennsylvania requires this as soon as you answer the first interview question that you have 1099s???? And why doesn't it import the 1099s from the entity that produced them - like it does for the other 1099s? Or why doesn't it ask you to upload all 1099s in the beginning so it has them ready? Shaking my head in disbelief.
The data entry process asks you in TWO different places to enter the value for the cost or fees of investing. This a cardinal no-no of data entry protocol. You enter values once, and report them wherever they are needed. I entered the value in both places. I have no idea whether the software used the same value twice or once. But I'm not worried because H&R has my back.
The check/validation process is a good idea, but it has its weaknesses. For one thing, it reports "errors" that are not errors. For example, I inherited a beneficiary IRA from someone other than my spouse. The software simply couldn't get over this fact. I also did not state that my benefactor "had a basis" in the account (which was true). So because of these true statements, the software erroneously informed me that my actual distributions from my IRAs may have been too little. This is all stemming from the beneficiary IRA situation. First, the warning is simply incorrect; there's no problem with the actual situation. Second, although you can bypass these "error" messages during the validation step, you can't tell the software to ignore them in the future, so EVERY TIME it takes you through the check/validation process, you have to review these SAME "errors" again. Exasperating because you don't know whether the error report is giving you new errors or not. Utterly exhausting.
The main reason I got the H&R Block software was to facilitate the completion of IRS Schedule D and the related requirements. While I believe the software produced a complete package in this regard, the process of getting there was simply much, much too hard.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents

Formerly great product has gone bad in 2025

I have used the HR Block software for many yers, and found it easy to use and reliable. However, the 2025 Deluxe Fed + State package was terrible. Often when I updated the software or saved a new version of the return numbers and text I had entered would change unexpectedly. I managed to file the returns, but with great labor, as I had to re-verify every single entry before transmitting the returns.
Cons: Hard to prepare

A Glitch

My spouse died in 2025. My preference is to e-file both my federal and my state returns. But when the program got to the point of filing my state return it told me that it could not e-file because the program did not have a way to put the death information on the electronic forms. A program warning told me to print my name in the block on the form. It didn’t say which block or which form. So I printed the state return and took it to the city office that checks the return and then processes it. They told me not to print my name on the form and pointed out the printed that said my wife was deceased. So there was a glitch in this year’s program. I’ve used tax-cut since 1995. This year’s interview was more confusing than any in the past, and the process seemed more complicated than usual. The price keeps going up. I don’t need 5 free federal returns (2 or 3 would be great), but a free state return would be nice (even if I couldn’t use it this year). A free state submission would make the program much. More affordable to me.
Pros: Easy to prepare
I would recommend this to a friend!
