I have used H&R Block for years, and file fed & state. I tried to file my state and it wouldn't work last night. The "help" on the software was not helpful at all. And, I missed the postmark deadline by not being able to file electronically.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I understand that the BBB law and CA state laws added a lot of new rules and regulations to the tax codes but the software should add more info and details to the help pages. In most cases, there’s just a one sentence indecipherable legalese that appears on the help pages and obviously this isn’t helpful. For a few cases, Google Gemini was able to explain what the H&R Block Tax Software application did not explain.
Also during the final steps (data integrity or verification check), the software asked me to check some data entries on my form. It’d be so much better if the software had a checkbox next to each item on the list that lets me confirm that “yes the data is correct” and to continue on to the last step; right now, I just open a form and close it and keep going and there’s no record that shows that I reviewed the data and verified it. For data errors, it’s different and I have no issues.
Finally, I reported a problem with the software’s embedded pop up window for logging into some brokerages to import 1099 documents. I’m repeating it here again - for Citi Wealth Management accounts, the software pops up a login window to Citi Wealth Management (rather than redirect to a webpage) but the password field of this pop up window doesn’t accept special characters (which is highly recommended for creating strong passwords).
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents

I've used Block Deluxe for years. Generally, I like it and trust it. But...Some things seem to be missing: penalty interview/form for underpayment (both Fed and state); sometimes certain pension/RMD data doesn't seem to transfer to state; more explanation for certain items is missing (for example, on short/long term capital gains when it's the result of a mutual fund computation rather than an actual sale).
Cons: Hard to import documents
I would recommend this to a friend!

After purchasing, I found out that you can't import files from Merrill Lynch. I mean one of the top 5 investment companies and H&R Block software isn't allowing it?

Difficulty in handling Foreign Income

One of my daughters has been working in China since August 2025. I filled out the Form 2555 as I have done in past years for her. Since she did not yet meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test, I left Section II of that form blank. However, the error message in the software said that I could not complete both Sections II and III (which I didn't). This resulted in my being unable to electronically file the return. Due to the error message, I had to make my first trip to the Post Office at 4:25 PM on April 15th.
When I got back, I learned that Pennsylvania would not electronically file her state return because of the presence of the Form 2555 as part of her federal return. This caused trip # 2 to the Post Office where I had to drive 30 minutes each way to the central Post Office and wait on line there for an hour to mail that return.
While I have used your software for many years, this was a most disappointing experience.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Hard to prepare
I would recommend this to a friend!
