Fine program for the usual stuff, but for unusual?

Reporting accrued interest on a bond purchase proved difficult. It was hard to find a place to enter info and when I found where to do so, the numbers on the Schedule B or worksheet came out wonky. We paid the interest in December, but received no interest on that bond until the following year. I'm not fully sure what the program did with the accrued bond interest, but it appeared to reduce our non-taxable interest even though the accrued interest was on a federally taxable bond. Regardless, the math didn't seem right. I wonder whether the glitch may have been due to the fact that the taxable interest reported on the 1099-INT was less than the accrued bond interest we paid. I'd say there is a problem with the tax software. It would help if IRS would require reporting of that info on the 1099-INT's. From internet comments, it seems brokerage firms often bury that info in the supplemental information and do not tell the customer what to do with accrued bond interest. IRS info seems to say that payers of accrued bond interest are to send 1099's to the seller of the bond, but we don't know who the previous owner of the bond was. I'd say that should be the duty of the brokerage firm.
