Some what short on state return

The Alabama return wanted a state ID number that was not included on the 1099 R from US Civil Service . It would not let me file electronically without it. Also the Alabama return would not automatically calculate that my Civil Service was not taxable in Alabama. It also didn’t know how much of my IRA was deductible. Turbo tax does that automatically depending on your state.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to import documents
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good basic tax software for a reasonable price

The program does a reasonable job of guiding one through the complex parts of both Federal and State returns, and the State return portion has gotten better over the years. I like the checker at the end, but occasionally problems identified disagree with the instructions in the interview. I've used this product for years, but I am often frustrated by how often the program asks me to input a value that can be obtained directly from last year's return (something that it often does do). Overall I find the program to be valuable and reasonably priced, when on sale. The free federal filing is a good feature, but electronic filing of the state return is too expensive. I just print mine and take it to the local DOR office.

Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

The program is overall very easy to use and import the information from the previous year. This year however it did not include all the forms I needed so I had to download some from IRS.gov and figure out the instructions. I also couldn’t get free help, or second look, from a local HRBlock office like I did in a previous year.

Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

Mostly it's fine but at the end it doesn't tell me how to pay the taxes I owe. Last year I was late because I had to wait until the IRS sent me a late notice and I suppose it will be the same this year.
