Terrible update process

Has been reliable for many years until 2024. The state program updated after I filed and caused me to underpay and own penalties.
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

I hav not been able to E-file my state return. I get an error message because my state ID does not have an expiration date. And have not been able to resolve this. I've been told this is a known glitch! But no help yet.

For simple taxes the software is pretty good. It would be nice to have an expert mode in addition to the guided tour. Complex taxes are generally not done in the order of the interview. I would also be nice to have a "what happens if I do this" mode. It would also be nice if the software was better at telling you where a number comes from as well as where a number goes. I have frequently had situations where I know the software numbers are wrong, but I cannot easily tell where the software is getting the wrong information from, so that the entries can be corrected. Additionally the feed from the federal interview into the state forms is not always clear. Information on itemization items that are not used for the federal due to standard deductions, still have to be correct for the state; this is an example of where a "where did this value come from" would be very helpful.

Decent Product with excessive, hidden fees

Decent product. However, once you buy the product, you learn about ridiculous, excessive charges for add-on services, such as e-filing a state my state return, cost for adding another state and several other fees. Thes fees are clearly not mentioned when buying the produce and grossly excessive, particularly in relation to the total purchase price for the original software.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've used HRB deluxe for several years. I haven't found anything better - yet. There are packets of date that ought to be populated automatically that still aren't - like drivers license data. Aggravating.
