Used to be great. Now sub par.

I have used Dobies for 20 years. A few months back the color changed to a bright yellow. But what else happened is that the quality suffered a serious decline. The outer covering now tears easily. A new one is torn from normal washing in a week. They used to last months! I suspect they changed suppliers or manufacturing process. Too bad.

I’m breaking up with you and I didn’t deserve this

I’ve noticed a slow decline in product quality over the past 5-7 years. Yep, YEARS as in I have trusted and depended on these for decades! Not anymore. It was bad, but not enough to stop purchasing, when the white mesh started to degrade. It was even worse when the white mesh continued to degrade more rapidly but I still bought them. The last two times I bought them the mesh is now yellow, they are smaller and thinner, and they last less than 4 DAYS. I am not purchasing these anymore because it’s just not worth it to me anymore. I stuck with my old standby favorite product for decades only to have to find a replacement. At least I hung in there so long that now I won’t have a problem finding anything more cost effective and reliable for what I need than the package that I feel is money wasted.
This is so mean of you guys! I was loyal and faithful and I treated each purchased product with respect and gratitude for the assistance they provided in my duties. I’ve tolerated declining conditions and prayed you would get better. I’ve gently disposed of far too many of my purchases far too soon and can no longer tolerate the grief of saying goodbye so soon to partners in my grime cleansing endeavors. I’m leaving you and will soon find another who shares my mission, my passion, and who has some longevity. I’m not asking for miracles, just that things work well and last a reasonable amount of time without disintegrating into crumbling mush in my hand. So long, I’ll think of you occasionally while I grip my new finds and scrub in peace.

Why ruin a GREAT product??
on December 27, 2025

I have used DOBIE for years and years and have always loved it. They never wear out, and if they start to wear out and fall apart, we still use them Loved the pale yellow as it was not too overpowering so that it would be noticed by anyone in the same room.
Now purchased a new box several months ago ~ what has changed??? This sponge does not have the integrity that the old sponges had. It started to fray and wear out within 2 months. My old DOBIES were like the Energizer Bunny ~ they just kept on going! I am SOOOOOO disappointed in 3M. You had a great product and perfect recipe ~ why did you change a good thing???

Product has deteriorated greatly

My mother used these in the 1970s and I have used them ever since. But the ones I have bought the past 6 months or so (the "new color sme product" are definitely of lesser quality. The covering is not as tightly woven and gives out quickly. They also stain immediately and do not wash out in the dishwasher. I used to get about a month out of each pad and would throw them out because they started looking tacky - rarely becasue they tore. Now I am lucky if I can get a week out of one before I have to toss it eitehr becasue ot is so dirty looking or has torn. . .

Where oh where did the old Dobie Pad go?
on January 22, 2026

I'm 60+yo and have NO memory of not having a Dobie Pad in a sink as a child or adult. In fact it became a "thing" of my mom's to gift all the kids Dobie Pads every Christmas. (a tradition that I continue!) I haven't had to buy or use a new Dobie Pad for a long time - I've been using up a large quantity that I "inherited" after my mother passed. Recently my stock had disappeared and I had to buy new. I was astonished to see how the quality of the outside mesh had apparently decreased. It was very noticeable - I had worn a hole through the mesh in less than two days! I thought maybe this was an exception but the experience was duplicated at my daughter-in-law's - a hole was worn through the mesh of a BRAND NEW pad within a couple of days. I realize how products have to "evolve" based on economics, material availability, production requirements, etc. but I would the changes made to the ole Dobie Pad, not the best! After I decided to write this review, I read many of a similar thread.

Dobie-What Happened to You?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using Dobies for over 15 years. I Love them for washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom and other cleaning jobs. Lately the quality of the outside mesh covering has gone down hill. In past years I could use my dobie for atleast two months, sometimes more. I often would put the dobie in the dishwasher or washing machine to keep it clean and it wouldn't fall apart. Recently my dobie will start falling apart after only using it 3-4 times. The outside mesh cover falls apart. It starts with a small hole which grows and grows until it is so large that it falls off the inside sponge.
Have you change the way you make the outside mesh. Please look into this. I am really disappointed that the dobie only lasts a week or two.

Incredible Shrinking Pad
on January 26, 2013
Posted by: SamF
I have been a faithful and satisfied user of your Dobie cleaning pads for many years. However, I am baffled as to why this rectangular scouring pad, now after a few uses magicaly SHRINKS down to a square. This transformation, in my opinion, renders your product virtually usless. I would be very interested to know if this is a planned "improvement" for some unknown reason or is it due to a new supplier of the raw materials or some different manufacturing process? I may be in the minority because I actually enjoy "doing the dishes", especially after a great meal shared with family and friends. Please fix this problem and return to making the great product I've enjoyed using for years.
Thanks for listening,
Sam F.

Dear Sam F., thank you for sharing your review and coming to us with your concern! We'd like to work with you to learn more about what might have caused this. What you describe and show in the picture don't seem to fit the way we see our Scotch-Brite® Dobie™ Cleaning Pads perform in tests, and we're concerned it might be an imitator product. It certainly isn't what you should expect from a Scotch-Brite product and we appreciate the opportunity to help. You should have received a direct email from us as well, but if not, please give us a call at 1-800-846-8887, referencing case # 5108066. We'd be happy to collect the product to investigate and get you a replacement. Thank you!

What's going on?

I have to echo what SamF wrote two years ago. I have been a loyal user of Dobie pads for many many years and have never experienced this issue until now. In your response it states that you think this could be an imitator product. However I am attaching a photo that will show you I am using authentic Dobie pads. However the small print on the box does state that these pads are now made in Mexico. Something must have changed in the manufacturing process for this to be happening. Would appreciate knowing if this is going to be fixed.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Are you microwaving the pad? Microwaving will cause the mesh to shrink and we do state not to microwave on the package.
