Best sound and noise cancelling but

I have this product for about three months. They have the best sound and noise cancelling I have tried. However, the touch controls are not reliable. They can be frustrating. Touch on any headphones is precarious. They need to have physical buttons. Swiping your hand up and down along your ear is stupid. Get physical buttons. I have a set of Powerbeats Pro with BUTTONS. There is so much butter control with PHYSICAL BUTTONS. I will not recommend this to anyone until that happens. Maybe I relate to the wrong people, but my friends all avoid headphones that require gestures.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

They are good, but not without issues.

When paired to my computer and iphone, and when a call comes in, I double tap to answer, and then the headset answers the call, but then disconnects the computer. So right when the caller is saying hello, they are pushed into the background and I have to listen to "Device 2 disconnected" then ask the caller to repeat themselves. If the firmware could be made to lower the volume of system messages to 1/2 of the phone volume, that would fix this, or simply not disconnect my computer when I get a call.

Hi akschu,
Thank you for purchasing the WH-1000XM4 Headphones. While we're glad that you like the Headphones, we regret to hear that it automatically disconnects from your computer when receiving a phone call from your iPhone. We'd like to troubleshoot and isolate the issue. Please make sure that the headphones has the latest software update, please use the Headphones Connect app to update the software. This issue may also be resolved by resetting the headset. Press both the power button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously while charging. The headset will be reset. The device registration (pairing) information is not deleted. If the headset does not operate correctly even after resetting, initialize the headset to restore factory settings. Turn off the headset while the USB Type-C cable is disconnected and then press and hold the (power) button and the CUSTOM button simultaneously for 7 seconds or more. The indicator blue flashes 4 times and the headset is initialized. This operation resets volume settings, etc. to the factory settings, and deletes all pairing information. In this case, delete the pairing information for the headset from the device and then pair them again.

Hi jackie27781, Awesome! We're glad that happy with your purchase. The WH1000XM4 features our Industry-leading noise cancellation technology where you hear every word, note, and tune with incredible clarity, no matter your environment. These noise canceling headphones feature additional microphones that assist in isolating sound for a reduction of even more high and mid-frequency sounds. Using the Sony Headphones Connect app, Ambient Sound Control lets you adjust the volume of background sound and gives you the option to allow voices alone to be heard. Meanwhile, the Equalizer lets you customize sound levels to suit your music. Thanks for choosing Sony. ~Ralph
I spent quite a while comparing the 'XM4s with Bose's 700s and glad I settled on XM4s for two reasons: better music reproduction and better software support (through a mobile device)--Bose's iOS software is spartan whereas Sony's is feature-rich.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Beside the great quality of the product it gives horrible experience in conference calls as there is no way to mute the microphone on the headphones.

Too bad, no upgrade for me, LDAC and AAC only
on October 8, 2020
Posted by: mtzlblk
Was going to upgrade my WH-1000XM3 headphones to get the Bluetooth 5.0 goodness, but can't the XM4s only have AAC and LDAC codecs, so much for that. I'm not going to limit my phone/tablet/whatever purchase to only ones that support AAC and LDAC. Sorry, No Aptx HD option means no upgrade, at least not to Sony products. We'll see who the first one to make high quality, noise cancelling headphones with Bluetooth 5.0 and support for AptX HD or at least a decent set of codec options.
Response from sony.comBy Sony North America Customer Support, October 12, 2020
Hi mtzlblk, Thank you for the feedback on the WH-1000XM4. We value your opinion and we would like to apologize if our product did not meet your expectations. We appreciate your feedback about not having an APTX HD codec support. However, this unit supports LDAC which gives the ability to stream Hi-Res music content, even over a Bluetooth connection. Thanks for sharing your feedback. -Sam

Sound is Great, but NO manual mute function!

I have the NC700 and these -- the sound quality is by far more superior than the bose to my ears. The comfort is also really great.
I do wish they allowed you to pair with more than 2 devices (phone + laptop is not enough, especially if you have a work laptop too! that is 3 devices!) .
I also had trouble trying to pair these with my SONY TV. My laptop can pair easily, but these can't, may be an issue with my TV, vs. the headphones though.
However, the most annoying thing about these headphones are the fact it doesn't have a quick button or feature to mute the mic when you are on a call.
I was hoping to use the custom button or two finger double tap ...but nope.
Maybe a software update would allow this? It is incredibly important feature for taking phone calls!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hi DoGreatThings, we're glad you like the sound quality and comfort of our newest industry-leading noise canceling headphones. We're sorry to hear that you have an issue with your SONY unit. When pairing, bring the headset and the Bluetooth device within 1 m (3 feet) from each other. To pair a second or subsequent device, press and hold the (power) button of the headset for 7 seconds or more to enter pairing mode. Sony takes into consideration all feedback to improve the performance and quality of our products and services. We're always looking to make Sony better.
