These were replacing an older model of the same headphones (1000MX ) that i have been using for years . The noise cancelling is great and the newer version has less metal, more lighter and comfortable . I like them better than Bose . I also replaced the ear cushions twice with after market ones ,find them on Amazon .

Best premium headphones

I was really debating between two headphones which was either XM4 or Airpod Max. The XM4 really beats Airpods Max just off the features like the bass performance which was I was looking at. It last for 30hrs, great noise cancellation, ambient mode and can "turn off". The downside for XM4's is that it will not have the latest bluetooth 5.0. I use an iphone and it does annoy me whenever I want to connect to other devices. Whereas Airpod Max did have amazing noise cancellation, transparency mode and bluetooth 5.0. the bluetooth makes connectivity so much easier for those who use Apple products. However, it was a disappoint that the Airpod Max doesn't have a turn off option and how it's overpriced. XM4's is the better option because it delivers better performance, it's lighter, phenomenal sound, last longer, and it's cheaper!
Hope this helps!

Works Great, Love the Wireless, and All the Extras

My previous ANC Headset was the Bose QC25s, and so I can't help but compare the two. I noticed that the background white noise of the Sony XM4 is slightly higher in pitch than the Bose QC25; making the white noise more noticeable. However, after having used the Sony XM4 for a while, I've adapted and stopped noticing it.
The bluetooth range is pretty impressive, managing to maintain a connection, with just a little bit of skipping (on LDAC + Quality Priority mode) across the ends of my house (about 50meters?).
The adjustable onboard equalizer is the best, allowing me to tweak the sound profile to what I like. So I'm not stuck with the default sound-profile.
The bass is pretty satisfying for me, although I guess the deep base "rumble" isn't so strong on these compared to a dedicated deep-bass headset. But I'm still very satisfied with the overall sound strength and quality.
The Adaptive Sound Control is an interesting feature, but I haven't really gotten outdoors to move around very much to really give the auto-switch "noise cancelling vs ambient sound level" a good shake. It has like 20 different levels of "Ambient Sound" modes, which lets in varying amounts of outside noise. It supposedly has a "Voice Focus" mode which will filter out the background noise, while letting in voice-frequencies for talking. I haven't given that a fair try yet either, but it doesn't seem to work with full noise-cancelling mode anyways which is my usual mode.
I charge these probably once every 2-7 days depending on how heavily I use them. I tend to just plug them in for a spell in between usage. Although, I've found I definitely can't use them while they're charging, the headset seems to be fully disabled while charging. The long battery life mitigates this issue; it's definitely a different way of managing your headset's power compared to the QC25s where I'd just swap out the batteries when I need.
The ear-padding is pretty soft, which is good, but I worry that my glasses will wear them out fast. My ears do tend to have less room compared to the Bose QC25's, and so I do feel my ears get warmer a bit faster than the QC25.
NOTE: I did have some trouble using these with my Samsung TV, the sound constantly stutters, until I manually changed the TV's Audio Codec to "PCM" instead of "Auto". Hopefully that little tip helps some others =)

Enjoying these headphones

These headphones sound quite good and I find them very comfortable when listening for a couple of hours. There seems to be a lot of flexibility when adjusting balance through the accompanying app. When I first listened to something (classical music) after ten seconds I wanted to return them. You can’t after the box has been opened. Then I found the equalizer in the app and that was able to help a lot. I am now enjoying these headphones though it can be a very personal decision. Haven’t tried the microphone, adjusting for different recording formats, noise cancelling level is adjustable and the battery is lasting a long time. Headphones look and feel good and come with a short usb charging cord, a two prong airplane power adapter and a wire for plugging in to source rather then Bluetooth connection all contained in a neat zippered case. Maybe five stars.

I've been eyeing these Sony WH-1000XM4's for a long time and I gotta say it was worth it. The Active Noise Cancelling is next level and sound quality is as good as it can get. The Sony headphones app with iPhone is easy to use and allows multiple simple ways to customize the headphones. (EQ, Level of noise cancelling, ambient mode, etc). Headphones are also super lightweight and slim compared to some other brands and the hard case with wires and airplane adapter are an added plus. Overall, if you need new headphones, go with the Sony WH-1000XM4's!

WH1000XM4 Headphone Review: Dec 20 2021 Purchased a few weeks ago, but already I can say the sound is just out of this world, with beautiful clear mid tones, and full mellow bass, without just loud boom, boom! Just richness! This is with the help of the EQ in the app. The fit of the headband is a little to snug for me, and I have a small oval face, but maybe because its new. The noise cancelling is phenomenal. I flushed the toilet, and couldn't hear it at all. Had to turn around and check! Lol. Don't care for the swipe controls. The Right ear cup is super sensitive, and l have completely accidentally turned my music off by my shoulder lightly brushing against it, or reaching my arm behind my head. I'd much prefer small push buttons. If anything touches that Right ear cup, you've lost or changed what you were listening too. But after a while you get used to it, and always have the option of turning the Sound Panel off in the app. The app has lots of settings and tests your ear size and hearing ability. A little irritating, but at 79 years I needed it, and it made for better sound. I just wanted to unbox, charge & use. The charging cable is about 3 inches long. Don't get the purpose of that. So have to buy one so I can charge the set without having to hug up the socket. The first day I wore them 14 hours in a row, and my ears were not sore at all. I Have used them a total of 26 hours straight without needing a charge. The tap-to-speak works well for calls. I have these on two different devices at the same time. Very nice feature. I highly recommend this version of Sony headphones. Albeit expensive, (though I did hit a Black Friday sale), I'm in music heaven, and very happy!

I have been pleasantly surprised as to the effectiveness of the ANC. These headphones are comfortable to wear for long periods and are extremely quite when the ANC is activated. I would purchase these again for certain.
