Still a Killer choice

These are still the king of headphones, the noise cancelling is the best, sound is great, and fit and comfort are top notch. Design is basically the same as the Xm3 but the feel has improved, kinda hope the design changes and improves, would like to see the ear cups slimmer, and Love an easy quick design for swappable ear-pads. Appreciate the ability to connect to two devices at once now.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hi Micboy, Thank you for this amazing review! We're thrilled to hear you appreciate the industry-leading noise cancelation, excellent sound quality, comfortable fit, and overall features of your new WH-1000XM4.
Intelligent and intuitive, the WH-1000XM4 headphones offer further improvements to our industry-leading noise cancelation, exceptional sound quality, and smart listening that adjusts to your behavior and your location. Using the Sony Headphones Connect app, Ambient Sound Control lets you adjust the volume of background sound and gives you the option to allow voices alone to be heard. Meanwhile, the Equalizer lets you customize sound levels to suit your music. Thanks for choosing Sony.
I got them for my birthday and they're worth all approximately 350 dollars! They're lightweight and comfortable and the battery life and quality are both outstanding. I loveeee them, 10/10 would recommend. They're good looking too, not bulky looking, they have a very clean, classy look to them. I wired them up to the headphone jack of my wireless xbox controller and had no trouble with them then. They come in a slick looking carrying case with space for the headphones and cord and charger/adapter for planes. I can not overstate how much I really love these headphones. The noise cancelling is pretty amazing to me. Makes focusing on studying muchhhh easier for me since I'm very sensitive to sound and noise distraction.
I would recommend this to a friend!

My experience

Headphones are good. I like the the sound and looks but the UX is a little bit lower then I expect. Mostly I use the headphones at home for work and play and in general I don't need the the "noice canceling" mode by default, I doesn't very like it. Every time when I turn on the headphones I need to click to times to turn off "noice canceling" and "noice control" that's annoying. Why my preference cannot be saved and every time when I turn on the headphones it's in the same mode which I turn it off? Is it hard to implement? I hope it can be fixed during coming updates. PLEASE! My little feature request :)
Also I suggest in futures models separate the button for "turn off" and "connect to the new device" options. I switch very often between laptop and mobile and it also very annoying to press the button 7 second for connecting to the new device :)
I hope my review was helpful. In general the headphones are great just fix the small UX issues and they will be the best! Thanks!

Hi Expertus,
Thank you for sharing your experience and detailed review with the WH1000XM4. We're glad to know you like your new headphones. Unfortunately, as normal operation of the headphones, the noise canceling function is turned on automatically when the unit is turned on. We value your feedback with regards the noise canceling feature and function buttons of the headphones. Rest assured that we will have this noted as we always takes into consider all feedbacks that will help improve our products and services.
The WH-1000XM4 is a new design, with intelligent and intuitive Ambient Sound Control features that include improvements to Multipoint connection and our industry-leading Noise Cancelation, exceptional sound quality, and Smart Listening that adjusts to your behavior and location. The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. Thanks for sharing your review and for choosing Sony! - Kris

Awful App

Grate device, but quality of software so low. Looks like it is not native application, also without UI-design. I can't permanently switch off noise-cancelling. Please hire normal software engineer for writing software instead freelancers (or restrict hardware engineers writing software)

Hi fridonium, While we are glad to hear that you are satisfied with the WH-1000XM4, we are sorry to hear that it did not satisfy your expectations when it comes to the Headphones Connect app. You can turn off/disable the Noise-Cancelling feature of the WH-1000XM4 Headphones by pressing the CUSTOM button repeatedly to turn off the noise-cancelling function. Each time the button is pressed, the function switches as follows and is announced by the voice guidance.
The Ambient Sound Mode: ON > The noise-cancelling function: OFF/The Ambient Sound Mode: OFF > The noise-cancelling function: ON
You may also refer to our help guide link on how to turn off the Noise-cancelling function. https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/wh1000xm4/v1/en/contents/TP0002752740.html
Please note that If the CUSTOM button is set as the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa button, the noise-cancelling function and Ambient Sound Mode cannot be switched from the headset. In this case, you can change the settings of the noise-cancelling function and Ambient Sound Mode with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.
We took note of your feedback with the Headphones Connect app as this will help improve our products and services.

First off, the noise cancelling works great. The ambient noise works very well…. if you aren’t listening to any type of audio. If you listen to anything, even talk radio, with any amount of volume, then it just becomes moot selling feature. If you are simply wearing the headphones for phone calls, then the ambient noise works great between calls. Speaking of wearing them, they are near impossible to keep in my ears regardless of the set up. I’ve tried all three sizes of silicone tips with both sets of wings. The only way that I can get them to stay in, is if I clean my ear canals and the silicone tips with rubbing alcohol prior to putting them in. But alas, if I’m not sedentary while wearing them, they begin to slip and eventually fall out. I’ve worn them while walking, running (treadmill and freestyle), biking, and while mowing the lawn. As soon as a teeny bit of sweat begins to get past the tips, you may as well cancel christmas, because they’re coming out. After that it’s completely impossible to put them back in. Perhaps some longer foam type tips would work a bit better for me. I work on airplanes every day and wear foam earplugs that I roll between my fingers and put them in until I can feel them in my throat, they never fall out, and they expand to give me a custom fit every time. The sound is amazing from these headphones. The bass is very good. The touch controls work very well once you learn the difference between the long press, single press and double press. Sometimes I get confused what I have set for each function and end up trying to do a voice search instead of turning the volume up. I wear them less and less due to the falling out issue, which is why I quickly forget my touch settings. I keep using them because the sound is amazing, but as soon as they start to fall out, I get aggravated and store them back in their charging dock. Sometimes with the priority on sound setting there is some crackling, but as long as I keep my audio device close by in an arm band or on my bike handlebars etc. the connection remains mostly stable. If I keep my audio device in my pocket, I can immediately tell that I need to change the settings to priority on connection, which is a bit annoying, considering I don’t always open the headphone app to use the headphones. Once they are connected to the audio device through the app, there is no need to open the app after that (except if you want to change settings). This is a love hate relationship right now, until I can figure out how to keep them in my ears. I can confirm personally, that they definitely work with android devices and Apple devices. I love the Target exclusive colors as well, I got the white ones!

Hi Sony Fanboy Number 1,
We're glad that you like the sound quality and noise canceling function of the headphones. It's unfortunate that you are not having a complete experience because of its fit. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Make sure that you are wearing the headphones properly. Put the unit with the (left) mark on your left ear and the unit with the (right) mark on your right ear. The left unit has a tactile dot. Twist the headset to secure the arc supporter to your ear grooves. Note: The earbud will be easier to slide deep into your ear if you pull up on the top of the ear lightly while twisting the headset.

Hello, I really hope this reaches the ears of the design department. I have almost nothing but praise for these headphones, I have well over a thousand hours of listening time in the short time since I’ve received them. They have amazing sound quality, the noise cancellation is outstanding, and it has helped me in more ways than I can count. However, there is one single problem I have with them. On the headphone part itself where it is held onto the metal peg of the band, there is a little piece of plastic in the swivel joint that holds the whole thing together. This part is made out of an extremely brittle plastic and within 12 hours of each other this piece snapped on both sides. For the past few months the only thing keeping my headphones working has been a tube of JB weld super glue. I’m not asking for a replacement or refund or any of that, I genuinely love this product. But I must ask if a piece as vital and stress impacted as this should not be made of aluminum or some other more durable material.

Terrible connectivity

While sound and comfort are good, the transparency mode activates without necessary action. The multi-device connectivity is poor, and the flow between the devices are the most inadequate.

Hi JXXM,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. While we're glad you like the sound quality and comfort of these headphones, we're sorry you've been running into some issues. Please allow us to help you and turn this into a better experience. Please make sure that the firmware version of the headphones is up to date (via Sony Sound Connect App) for optimum performance.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony Sound Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions. Also, please check the Speak-to-Chat function. The Speak-to-Chat mode activates when the WH-1000XM4 detects the speech of the person wearing them, but in rare cases, it may activate in response to vibrations caused by devices such as electric toothbrushes and electric shavers, or by activities such as brushing your teeth, coughing, or humming. If this is bothersome, you do have the option to turn off the Speak-to Chat function to listen to your music without interruption. To disable Speak-to-Chat, hold 2 fingers to the touch sensor control panel once again until you hear the voice guidance say, “Speak-to-chat deactivated”.

For total convenience, the WH-1000XM4 can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously so, when a call comes in, your headphones can automatically connect to the right one. Please refer to the guidelines below:
• Multipoint connection works with only two devices at a time. - A third device can be connected through Bluetooth, however, the Bluetooth connection with the last device that played music will stay connected and the second device will be disconnected in order for the third device to establish the Bluetooth connection with the headphones. • Download the Sony Sound Connect app on one of the devices and make sure it has the latest update. • If you want to play music from the other device, stop playback on the device that is playing the music, and start playback by operating the other device. - Even if you start playback by operating the second device while playing music on the first device, the music from the first device will continue to be heard via the headset. In this state, if you stop playback on the first device, you can listen to music from the second device via the headset. • To ensure you get the best Bluetooth connection, please set the headphones Bluetooth Connection Mode to “Priority on stable connection”.
