too many problems

Thia is a nice looking unit, but has too many problems. The player pauses for no apparent reason in the middle of a movie. Also, the sound cuts out at various times when using the digital audio out. These problems occur even after the firmware was updated.

Firmware update needed out of the box
on June 6, 2010

I like the unit but was annoyed with the need to update firmware the day I purchased it. The unit would play the Blu-Ray title "Alice in Wonderland" but would not play "Avitar". The manufacture date of my unit was 4/30/2010 and the date of the only listed firmware update is 4/14/2010. I feel it should have been loaded prior to shipping.

Excellent so far.

Although I have only used the DVD features so far, I am very impressed with the picture quality! Regular DVDs and Blue Ray DVDs load quickly and my at-home recorded DVDs play well also. I haven't run across anything it won't play yet. The upconvert feature works very well and gives great pictures with standard DVDs, which are by far most of my collection.
There are some things I would change to make operations even better: 1. allow pop-up window for menu rather than full screen so I can see the effect of changing the picture format, colors, etc. 2. Allow 1080i output over RGB cables too for more connectivity options.
You really ought to say right on the box that a wireless adapter is required for internet features. I suspect most of us don't have our computers next to our home theater systems. Most retail outlets don't have the manuals available and don't like you opening the box to get all the details.
I love the front panel lights, but am worried about the durability of the DVD tray and door system. I wouldn't want children using this machine or having it in a setting where different people would be loading it! Other than that it is a "keeper" and a good value.

Very Good Buy but can be better & here's how

Let me first say that this player does a lot of things very well and I think it is a very good buy for the money.
The following are suggestions covering five areas that will make it even better and more functional.
1) Fix service site manager software so that it will remember the password for the Google Picasa app. Currently, it does not remember it. Therefore, I cannot login to my Picasa favorites, folders, etc. I really like Picasa by Google and it would be great if this app can work to its fullest extent.
2) Please tell us where to sign up for the app store that works with the BD-C5500 player. The only app store I can find on the internet for Samsung appears to be for Samsung mobile devices only. If I sign up for that app store, the BD-C5500 does not recognize the login credentials in the service site manager. It says invalid or something. I would love to be able to download additional apps but do not know how to do this and the manual does not adequately cover this area.
3) Make the PC Share software show the contents of my Windows PC in the same format as on my Windows PC (i.e. alphabetical order and by folder). This would make selecting files much easier. Also, allowing categorization by genre, and then by album within genre would be great. Currently, once you go into genre, it just shows you all the songs from all the albums jumbled together.
4) Ask Rovi to update their software. Currently, the time they are using is off by about 6 hours. The software appears to be accessing the wrong time within the BD-C5500, despite the fact that I manually set the time within BD-C5500 settings to the correct local time. The effect of this is that you don't get the correct listings for shows.
5) Ask AccuWeather to modify their app so that you can select deg F units (versus deg C) and it stays. Currently, you can change it, but once you exit it out of the app, it reverts back to degree C immediately. In other words, you have to change it every time you access the app. Also, some additional information would be great: such as weather radar map, relative humidity, wind speed, dewpoint, rain, etc.

A Great Blu Ray player!

This is my first Blu Ray player and I am thoroughly pleased so far with it. I do not have hi-speed internet yet to be able to try out all the available features that the hi-speed requires, but it is on the way and I can't wait to try them out. As far as the basic player functions, this player has a great looking cabinet with very nice touch controls. The USB input is a nice option as well as the LAN network input as well as the WiFi USB input. It has an optical output for the audio and component video and audio outputs along with the obvious HDMI output. I purchased this player the same time as I purchased a Samsung LN32B640 TV. I chose Samsung based on the manufacturer's reputation as well as in store side by side demos. I would definitely recommend this player to anyone looking to go to Blu Ray or replace and older Blu Ray player.

Shouldn't have to update the firmware

A nice starter blu-ray player. I don't really use any of the internet@TV apps as it doen't play well with my router. However, the blu-ray does its job. However, you shouldn't have to upgrade the firmware. Not a big deal, but if you are not tech literate you would have no chance.
