APC Back UPS Pro BR / Clean Power = Peace of Mind
on July 6, 2019

Just unpacking the APC Back UPS Pro BR (BR1350MS) communicates through and through, high quality engineered product. From the get-go, eco friendly molded pulp packaging safely protects the ~20+lb product from shipping and handling damage and even has a compartment to secure the power cord plug from banging around inside the box. Slide the product out of the heavy duty plastic bag and it only gets better. First, you will find the product is encased in a robust, textured plastic, well-ventilated enclosure, tagged with an exhaustive quality and compliance testing checklist for one's review and and an instruction label indicating how to connect the battery. Connecting the battery proved to be a straightforward fastener-free procedure — slide open and remove panel, tilt battery out, connect the positive lead to the battery, replace cover and slide closed. Now the best part, after removing the protective plastic terminal cap from the power cord terminals, plug it in and find the power button center stage on the front panel and press it. The white on black LCD panel delights with everything you need to know in a well designed interface angled for easy viewing from a seated or standing position, including online status, voltage display, load monitor, battery capacity and audible status indicator. The display can be set for full-time visibility or the default power-saving 60-second illumination after pressing display button. Plug in your altar of electronics, 6 Battery Backup with Surge Protection and 4 Surge Protection Only outlets, and connect the USB data cable to your computer, Mac or PC. Note macOS immediately recognizes the APC Back UPS in the System Preferences / Energy Saver control panel, no software install required, and if desired the Menu Bar can display the UPS status real-time. The APC User Manual and online documentation lacks in explaining this for all of their UPS products, a bit strange given their attention to detail. Beyond surge protection and battery backup, this BR model takes a step above the BN Series and generates smooth SineWave power, as opposed to stepped approximation sine wave power, plus provides AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) that will compensate, not only for undervoltage, but for overvoltage line conditions. This is just as important as surge protection and backup power for maximizing equipment lifespan and ensures compatibility with Active PFC electronics, avoiding unexpected shutdown of PFC power supply devices. To top it all off, APC backs-up their engineering with a 3-year Warranty and a Lifetime US$500,000 Equipment Protection Policy.
Full disclosure, APC provided me this product for review. Nonetheless, I have yet to come across any company to its better. Once losing a computer, monitor and printer in one shot to a line surge, not only do I utilize surge protection and uninterruptible power supplies, I only utilize APC products — in my opinion and experience, the best.
Pros: Easy to Perform Maintenance, Good Value, High Quality, High Confidence Level in 24/7 Uptime
Cons: Lacking Vendor Support

On day 2, power fluctuated, the battery worked!

I've considered the benefits of having Uninterruptible Power Supply for my computer and audio equipment. A power outage, fluctuation, or surge has never damaged my equipment, but I considered the benefit. Just yesterday after having it set up for 2 days, the work being done in the commercial suite below me (or something) caused some lights to flicker. My APC Back-UPS Pro switched to battery power for a few seconds then back to utility. Not bad! I was in the middle of unsaved editing!
Pros: Energy Efficient, Good Value, High Quality, Good Vendor Support

Unexpected UPS Failure
on June 2, 2022

I have had this unit since mid-April and it has got the job done on two occasions, but tonight it tripped offline, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. The display indicates only 50% load as I write this review, but when it tripped my computer wasn't being used. I bought this device to prevent this from happening! Any ideas?

Beefy Backup BR1500MS2
on February 9, 2021

Purchased this unit to protect key computing devices, to include a Synology DS1520+. The total load, according to the APC front panel, is one bar. So, with the little equipment I have hooked up, this should run for quite awhile. However, on a test run (pulled the plug to simulate an outage), the unit drops from 78-minutes to 58-minutes runtime within 30-seconds and the battery monitor dropped from 5-bars to 3-bars in the same amount of time. This was quite surprising, given this is only hooked up to four devices and a minimal draw. I didn't let it go beyond a minute / minute and 1/2 as it seemed to settle at 58-minutes and I didn't want to needlessly cause long term drain on the battery. On a positive note, this interfaces beautifully with the Synology, it automatically alerted me, and was prepared to shutdown to preserve data. So, all things considered, the battery in the APC or it's suspiciously rapid drain makes me wary on how long this will hold out on standby, but it seems to work and given these facts I'd say worth a solid 4-stars. Could be better if the drain wasn't as bad, but pleasantly adequate.
Pros: Easy to Perform Maintenance, Ease of Management, Good Value
Cons: Low Confidence in 24/7 Uptime

Buyer Beware

I know there are a lot of positive reviews about APC and its products but as a first-timer into the UPS space I'm beyond unimpressed. Not only has the unit failed to switch between battery and wall power fast enough to prevent a sudden computer shutdown during an outage on multiple occasions ( the sole purpose for this product existing), but the quality and design of the product need to seriously be reviewed by APC Engineers. I Purchased this product less than three years ago, and in that time I have gone through three units. My first one shut off during a power outage and refused to turn back on. After being sent a replacement free of charge the second unit was dead on arrival, and after receiving a third unit that powered on I thought all was well. Then less than 10 months later I turned off the unit to relocate it in my apartment, and upon trying to turn it back on it started smoking with a horrible odor and set off the fire alarms. I'm almost certain a capacitor blew (Which is toxic) and means I now will have to put up with a 4th unit in less than 3 years. I want to say I'm just seriously unlucky but I've seen numerous reviews and discussions on other sites about this same issue, and customers going through 2-7 units in the lifespan of one battery (3-4 years). This unit has numerous flaws from mosfets cracking from being at the upper limit of their rating, to capacitors blowing from once again being stressed to their upper limit, to the PCB itself being of poor quality and resembling a "90's hand-soldered PCB" quoting a review on amazon with photos to match. For the (Pro) badge and this being APC's most expensive consumer household product I find this to be a disgrace and a cash grab more than a renowned product meant to have any vital/important equipment attached to it. Its ONLY saving grace is the connected equipment insurance policy that comes with the product, but what's the point of buying this product if it just increases the likelihood of damaging your equipment? I'm likely never returning to APC unless they can get this hot mess express turned around. I honestly suggest just a high-end surge protector and a high-quality PC power supply, while it sucks that your pc will still shut off unexpectedly, at least it greatly decreases your chances of failing and damaging sensitive, well-made electronics.
Cons: Too Expensive, Part Failure, Low Confidence in 24/7 Uptime
