I got this phone over a year ago when it was brand new. When I got a new Samsung phone I rooted this bad boy and upgraded to 4.1. I almost wish I had not bought the new phone. This one still works like a charm.
I never had a complaint about this phone, except the stock software for the gps was pretty bad.
Pros: Durable
Cons: gps is very slow
I would recommend this to a friend!

So far this is the best phone ever. Cool features makes It amazing. One really nice is that the caller ID talks telling you who is calling or whose message you just received. I'm keep in It safe for a while so I can give It to someone special like my son. I moved to the GALAXY S III.
And that is another different thing. even more amazing than this one I just don't believe my eyes.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight
I would recommend this to a friend!

Best phone I have ever owned

When I originally got this phone, it had just come out and was one of the newest, most technologically advanced phones available. It surpassed all of my expectations, an was overall an amazing product. I lost it a few months ago, and now, even though there are newer phones on the market, I got this phone again because I absolutely loved it.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Phone got better as more firmware upgrades were added

This was a phone that was good for its time. Actually it was a great phone for its time. I noticed as more firmware upgrades became available, the phone bugs got better. Then it worked perfect. Of course with phones it did not take long for Samsung to come out with about 10 more phones to choose from that were better than this one but this phone is and was a good phone. Simple to use and great features.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight
I would recommend this to a friend!

Switched from iPhone, NO regrets

I have been a smartphone user for a long time, and I have used many phones and this phone has the best form factor of any phone I have used. Thin is one of my requirements, and this phone fits the bill perfectly. I use my phone for work (Exchange email, calendar, contacts) and I travel a lot too (mostly for work) so I wanted something to watch movies and listen to music. Once you have a large screen, like the iPhone it is hard to go back. This phone surpasses my iPhone in all ways. It is not perfect, but all of the minor flaws should be fixable in a software update - unlike poor design choices (like placing antennas where your finger can touch them and short them out). My biggest complaint is that I can't dial phone numbers in calendar appointments (click on them like a link). Apple had this problem in the iPhone for 2 years, so I am hopeful that Samsung will fix it quickly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

An excellent smartphone except.........
on August 18, 2010

I moved from an Iphone 3G to the captivate about a week after it was released. I was fed up with having to use iTunes and convert all my video files and basically being locked into one option to get anything on or off my phone. Anyway, into the review which is mostly a comparison to my iPhone experience(sorry for the strange breakdown, you'll see)
Some Pros of the android software: much easier to change settings and access to many more settings, love the variety of apps and ability to modify and edit documents and media files, dropbox is actually usable and with keepass is a great tool to securely keep data on your phone. The google maps and navigator integration would be great except for the GPS issues discussed below. All in all android is a much more adaptive OS than iPhone. Samsungs additions have added polish without hindering any of the adaptability and, in turn, AT&T surprisngly hasn't handcuffed it too drastically. I love the customization options and ability this phone has to operate more like a computer and less like a phone. Voice search is a an absolute pleasure to use and it appears will only get better with the Froyo upgrade.
Cons of the software: learning curve is steep, you will need to do some research into what apps to use and how to use this phone if you are a new android user. I happen to enjoy this part of the new phone process but others may not. The default email program is pretty mediocre, i ended up deleting my account info and going with the gmail app. There are fun games but not quite the same variety as on the iPhone....yet.
Hardware: the display is beautiful, it does wash out in daylight but not to the degree that it is unreadable. The phone has some creakiness with the way the back panel latches in but it's nothing too drastic. The 4 buttons are not the most sensitive but you adapt to pause a half a second to let it react. The micro USB plug is set into the phone with a neat little slide cover. That feature (flaw?) prevents you from using just any micro usb plug as they will not insert far enough to register. Has a nice handfeel but it does seem a bit thin with no real way to grip the sides and the power button is dead opposite the volume rocker resulting in sometimes unwanted volume changes when trying to lock the phone. Battery life is a bit worse than my iPhone it seems. I'm still in new phone usage territory so I'm, of course, draining it much faster but it still lasts the day. None of these issues have reduced my pleasure at using this phone in any significant way so leading to my major gripe....
My major issue with the phone: The GPS is junk. Yes there is a GPS, yes it does occasionally function as such. 90% of the time it us unusable for anything other than telling you what town you are in. It takes upwards of 30 seconds to lock on (after you search the xda forums and mess with the GPS settings for 3 days, didn't lock at all before). Even if it locks on and it looks like you're all set it'll randomly lose accuracy to the point that it can't tell what block you are on or even drop the signal entirely. Needless to say this is not acceptable in a device that supposedly functions as a turn-by-turn GPS. It's entirely unusable in this capacity and I would not hesitate to say dangerous. If you attempt to use it a a GPS it WILL drop off or fail to update your location right when you are negotiating a few tricky turns. Leaving you stranded in moving traffic without the slightest clue where you are going. I have not seen definitive evidence if this is a software or hardware issue, there are many forums that suggest fixes and people that claim that their device operates perfectly after some setting changes. Mine does not regardless of what settings I change. It seems strange to not recommend an otherwise excellent phone based on this but many of the really useful location aware apps are now very frustrating to use because it either provides horribly inaccurate info or takes so long to find my location I might as well be using the yellowpages. I will be exchanging my phone for another captivate in hopes that there is some flaw in my GPS chip but if it doesn't fix the problem or if Samsung doesn't own up and respond there are other phones on other carriers that will satisfy my new found love for android.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
