At 1st the Captivate was an OK phone on android 2.1. It got better with 2.2. Then when samsung said that it wouldn't upgrade the Captivate to Gingerbread I went the custom rom way with Serendipity 6.x the 7.x, CM7, and ultimately to ICS 4.0 via CM9.
Great phone for a basic user. The design as well as the display quality are good to the eye . This phone is also light wieght and thin in size. With my experience The Galaxy S does lag with updates and lacks performance in data coverage as well as battery life. Overall if someone is looking for a great looking lightwieght phone for a low cost this is it!!
Cons: battery life, laggy, slow to update messages
I would recommend this to a friend!

Awesome Phone, poor external speakers

Love everything about these phones with the exception of both of them I own have poor external speakers. After about a year, the speakers quit working intermittently, making it impossible to use speaker phone or listen to music. Also the ram on these phones is low, causing them to freeze up often.
Samsung has been known to make quality products which I would say are normally 5 stars. This product rated 3 stars due to the number of software problems since the latest software upgrade. I am also not satisfied with the poor selection for a power connector which is very fragile for a phone with such great potential. If I were Samsung I would really talk with outside users of products and not rely on internal evaluations as the products will not get better until outside of Samsung thoughts of the products are provided to get the products back to the high quality for which Samsung was known.
Cons: Poor quality, Not high def, speakers are weak, battery life is poor
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not Happy

When the Galaxy S first came out I thought it was an amazing phone, after a while my phone kept force closing, then it would shut itself off.. I went through several phones, each phone having a different issue. My phone was finally due for an upgrade so I upgraded to the Samsung Infuse 4G better phone... BUT my husband still had the Captivate... He has had the phone only about a year and in a Otter box its entire life, this phone looks bran new except it doesn't work.. The speaker went out, it shuts itself off and force closes all the time. I love Samsung and their products but hate that after only a few months they deteriate.
Cons: Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I decided to purchase this phone for my wife and I to save money over the iPhone. At first I was pleased with the phone, but I was looking to add some functionality with the expected Gingerbread update. Upon install of Gingerbread many of the functions that worked well either stopped working or worked intermittently. The phone began to drop more calls and sometimes just shut off by itself and the battery needed to be removed to get it to turn back on. This was a problem as I had an Otter Box case and each time the phone turned itself off I had to completely remove the case to pull out the battery. I am Leary of purchasing another Samsung phone after having all these problems and my next phone will be an iPhone.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: slow, wi-fi conection problems, gingerbread update breaks some functionality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A nice, capable phone. Had a few booting issues when a microSD card was inserted, but otherwise a reliable, fast, and responsive phone.

I have had this phone for over 2 years now. It has served me well. It has been a little glitchy lately with some of the updates. I am looking at upgrafeing to the s 3 soon.
