This has been through thick and thin with me. I am extremely happy with the screen size, the AMOLED screen, the colors and the brightness, as well as the battery life. The modem inside and mic seem very good since people tell me that I'm crystal clear even though I am in a car or near something loud. The speaker is a little tinny, but what do you expect? I am glad this Galaxy S phone became a staple of Samsung's for the mobile market, which is why it is still to this day getting upgraded. A+ on this one.
Have had the Captivate since the summer of 2011, and never had issue with it, running 2.2 Froyo. Battery life and speed of phone were excellent. However I recently updated the phone to Gingerbread 2.3.5 after receiving the update notice, and have been having battery drain issues, and a few other issues with the phone, such as the tethering app crashing/having to be force closed, when I'm just plugging it in to charge. I find this annoying as I NEVER tether my phone to use as a modem. I also have random restarts, which I'm assuming it does when it uses up all the available RAM. But I've only had this issue sporadically, however it has been a annoyance when trying to do something and it occurs.
I picked the Captivate over the iphone because I didn't want to become "one of those people". The phone worked great for over a year, until I tried to upgrade to gingerbread and it fried my phone.
I am the kind of person who likes to be cutting edge, but not bleeding edge. I want a product that is still new and has great, timely features, but I also want something that has been around long enough to be proven. I like to know what bugs and kinks I am getting into. So when it was time to upgrade our phones, my husband and I did weeks of research before deciding that the Samsung Captivate would not only meet, but exceed, our needs. The call quality is excellent, the touchscreen response is smooth and accurate, the battery life is great. I have experienced a couple service hiccups that I have yet to attribute to the phone or the service provider, but a quick reboot of the phone resolves the issue and it does not happen often. I'm very satisfied with my Captivate, and so is our kindergartener!
