this phone was my best friend for more then a year, going every where with me. just about a month ago though, it decided to die for unknown reasons. i tried to reflash the droid installation and the phone completely bricked... turns out i was one of the very unlucky people that got batch number 1008... which as i found out had the 3 button combo completely locked for no reason, manufacturing defect? so up until that point this phone was great. so i would suggest it as a cheap android phone, but make sure it is not one of those dreaded phones from the defunct batches

Only if gingerbread came with it would it beat the competition.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive
Cons: lacks gingerbread

This phone is a great first Android device for anyone! If you like to multi-task, and simplify life this is the device for you!

Best 2010 Smartphone - Great display!

Obviously this review is a bit late since this phone is nearly legacy compared to all of the other awesome Samsung smartphones (i.e. Galaxy S II / Galaxy Nexus).
Overall the Captivate is a great performing phone. I really have enjoyed the phone since the 2.2 (Froyo) update as I noticed an improvement in battery life as well as performance.
When I received the phone my friends were very impressed by the display and color compared to their own Android phones.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Lightweight
Cons: still waiting for 2.3 update for more improvements

Good phone solid feel in the hand, easy as a dream to update and load custom ROMs. My first Android phones and it happen to be one of the best for its generation.
