Switching from a classic cell phone to a smartphone is a bit daunting at first, but once you get a handle on it.....They are awesome. Definitely will never go back to a standard cell phone.
I've been using the Captivate for almost a year now. The AMOLED display is second to none (except maybe AMOLED2). The device was (and proably still is) a true alternative to iOS devices. Battery consumption is acceptable - it needs a recharge at the end of a busy day, and carrying the charger is a prudent thing to do. Updated to Android 2.2 was a plus (task manager, new features, etc.).
The biggest disaapointment was the GPS, specifically, the speed to initially acquire and sustain a lock. Otherwise, the Captivate would earn a 5 rating overall.
Only issues with the phone are the lagging compared to the iPhone 3GS in response when you touch the screen. The lack of a front camera. No LED lights.
I have 2 capitivate cells and have had to replace both with in a month or two. I spent many hours with AT&T and Samsung techs to try to resolve the issue of WIFI staying connected. the one phones WIFI is ok, however, the other I must do a master reset at least once a month. The one replacement did not have the updated software like my 1st purchased phone had. The replacement phone also will not "sleep" -- the home screen will not shut off after 1 minute and eats up the battery. The user manual leaves a lot to be desired relative as to how to use all the functions which leaves me to search the internet. I was all excited about purchasing this phone but not it's just so so. Certainly not what I expected.
Cons: Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I love my captivate! The only thing that could make this better would be surround sound!
