Had this phone since Jan 2011 and updated it to Android 2.2. Considering all the things that this phone can flawlessly do, then I cannot justify any lesser of a rating than excellent. The few petty things that happen are: After a while my videos (saved, youtube, etc) stop playing until I restart the phone. I can't seem to scroll through a "choice list" on form fields and instead the entire webpage scrolls.
Everything seems to work fine. There are enough apps out there to customize your home screens, widgets, switches and killers (to save batt life), ringtones, wallpapers, maps, audible driving directions, text to voice, voice recognition, product scanning/lookup, HD video and pics.
Allot of complaints about GPS not being accurate. I've noticed this too, however the accuracy goes way up when data and wi-fi are turned on. It even uses the phone sensors for walking accuracy.

The system still moves too slow and theres not wma video streaming. The keys are still not insync with screen. The sun can still over shine the display.
Cons: Did not meet expectations

Captivate thoughts..

A great phone, cant wait to upgrade to the infuse. Overall no problems with the captivate as a device, however features that are available from Samsung are not available here in the USA. On my old Samsung I had PC Studio, loved it, then with the captivate, there was Kies I had been told...then found that Kies was not for USA users. A very horrible mistake for Samsung, makes me possibly reconsider staying with Samsung phones. But I suppose it is AT&T that may be the reason for no Kies, but who knows, I would love to see a USA version built soon, very soon. I also wonder why such a great droid has to be last in line for system upgrades 6month wait for 2.2 and now who knows how long for Gingerbread. The Infuse will be sold with 2.2, strange to me but, again a great device so I will put up with my carriers restrictions to have the very best phone, Samsung. Buy it, love it and be happy with what you have, maybe the future will be better for upgrades and Kies.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight, battery life, big hard drive, large sd card capable, it works well, easy battery access
Cons: low speaker volume, no front facing camera, no flash for camera

LARGE DISPLAY WITH EXCELLENT RESOLUTION. VERY GOOD COMPATABILITY WITH EVERY ANDROID APP I HAVE USED SO FAR (AND I'VE GOT A BUCH OF THEM). GOOD MEDIA PLAYBACK AND CELL NOISE REDUCTION FOR PHONE CALLS. EASY UPGRADE TO FROYO 2.2. RESPONSIVE TOUCHSCREEN, BUILT IN SWYPE KEYBOARD IS AMAZING!
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Realistic color
Cons: occasional slow boot

AWESOME phone HORRIBLE GPS

I bought this phone because I needed a new phone and it was at a great price. I love the phone all in all but I have a phone that is 5+ years old and has a better GPS than this model. Everywhere you look people are having problems with the GPS. Its really sad that a new piece of hardware like this has such a huge design flaw.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive
Cons: Did not meet expectations, gps doesn't work at all.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
