Great phone! love the screen! love the interface! wish had the same lock screen as the evos and that there were more cases out there for this phone, also the battery life isnt the greatest but with the right app itll last longer. but the phone itself is awesome!!
I decided that i would go on and do my review of this phone after owning it for 3 months now and i can personally say i am extremely impressed by Samsung's Captivate. I bought this phone as my first smartphone purchase because i was looking for a phone that was full touch but powered by android, and was slim in profile. I had been reviewing this phone ever since it launched debating if i should get it. the major selling points on this phone hands down the Super AMOLED display is just fantastic it make my videos look vibrant and very vivid. The display of the phone did just like its name captivated me. The music player on this phone is very solid. The friendstream on this makes it very easy to see what is going on in facebook as well as twitter or myspace. The phones 5MP camera was a major step up for me from 2MP on my Samsung Solstice. The ability to record high definition video was a nice extra. The phone handles a lot of games pretty smoothly with out much or any lag thanks to the 1Ghz processor. Pretty much any app you get for this phone is going to run pretty smoothly even file extraction apps it handles them very well. Now that the phone has the Android 2.2 operating system the web on this phones is simply the best ever for a mobile phone.Like the title of my review what cant this phone do.
I have had the Captivate for almost 4 months now. It is a great phone. Pros. I use the phone for both work and personal. I use the apps for work, directions, translation, news, texting, email, contacts, searching the web, taking pictures & videos, and play. Everything works great. Quality workmanship all around. Cons, No flash with the camera and I have needed to add the app "Keep Captivate Alive" to prevent unwanted shut-downs. Currently running Android 2.1
Pros: Bright display, Durable, Realistic color
Cons: unwanted shut-down, no flash
I would recommend this to a friend!

on March 31, 2011

I loved this phone initially. Great features. Screen is beautiful. However, after about 3 months, my phone begins shutting off randomly throughout the day. Sometimes is 1-2 times each day. Other times, up to 12!
Device size and features are good, but battery life is not good.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive, Realistic color
Cons: poor battery live, front camera doesn't work
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does Almost All I Need It To.

My Captivate came with 2.1 but was almost immediately updated to 2.2FROYO.
This phone is excellent for viewing documents on the go, and syncing up to my various email accounts. It has great multimedia features and with the ability to add another 16GB allows me to toss whatever music I want and a few movies to watch on flights. Internet over 3g is fast enough and is excellent at WIFI hotspots or at my house.
It does have a couple of things that detract from it though. Battery life with the factory battery is pretty bad when it is used for anything other than just a phone. My AT&T version did not come with a Blue Tooth voice dialer, meaning I will have to find one at the app store for it. While really more of an annoyance than a problem, it is still a pretty big omission considering many vastly less expensive dumb phones come with voice dialing built in. The final issue I have with it is content creation. The touch screen keypad is fine of the occasional text message, but any sort of content creation is a bit of a pain to get done. Again, it is not really a problem, that is what my laptop is for, but I just thought I should mention that long winded emails or writing a report is pretty much not really a good idea on this device.
Pros: Durable, Lightweight, multimedia, with the propper apps can veiw almost any document, internet is fast enough
Cons: no voice dialer, poor battery life when used as more than a phone, not really suitable for content creation

Nice glitchy phone

The phone is nice, but glitchy. Odd shutdowns. Infrequent and delayed software updates. The GPS isn't even close. The phone has excellent screen definition. The metal back plate is a nice, durable touch which is easily removed to access the battery, SIM, and memory expansion. Included basic KIES software is inadequate. Cloud syncing is convoluted and untrustworthy.
Pros: Bright display, Realistic color, metal back plate, easy to access battery/sim
Cons: Did not meet expectations, innacurate gps, cloud syncing, no advanced kies software, phone updates aren't frequent
