Beefy Backup BR1500MS2

Purchased this unit to protect key computing devices, to include a Synology DS1520+. The total load, according to the APC front panel, is one bar. So, with the little equipment I have hooked up, this should run for quite awhile. However, on a test run (pulled the plug to simulate an outage), the unit drops from 78-minutes to 58-minutes runtime within 30-seconds and the battery monitor dropped from 5-bars to 3-bars in the same amount of time. This was quite surprising, given this is only hooked up to four devices and a minimal draw. I didn't let it go beyond a minute / minute and 1/2 as it seemed to settle at 58-minutes and I didn't want to needlessly cause long term drain on the battery. On a positive note, this interfaces beautifully with the Synology, it automatically alerted me, and was prepared to shutdown to preserve data. So, all things considered, the battery in the APC or it's suspiciously rapid drain makes me wary on how long this will hold out on standby, but it seems to work and given these facts I'd say worth a solid 4-stars. Could be better if the drain wasn't as bad, but pleasantly adequate.
Pros: Easy to Perform Maintenance, Ease of Management, Good Value
Cons: Low Confidence in 24/7 Uptime

Buyer Beware

I know there are a lot of positive reviews about APC and its products but as a first-timer into the UPS space I'm beyond unimpressed. Not only has the unit failed to switch between battery and wall power fast enough to prevent a sudden computer shutdown during an outage on multiple occasions ( the sole purpose for this product existing), but the quality and design of the product need to seriously be reviewed by APC Engineers. I Purchased this product less than three years ago, and in that time I have gone through three units. My first one shut off during a power outage and refused to turn back on. After being sent a replacement free of charge the second unit was dead on arrival, and after receiving a third unit that powered on I thought all was well. Then less than 10 months later I turned off the unit to relocate it in my apartment, and upon trying to turn it back on it started smoking with a horrible odor and set off the fire alarms. I'm almost certain a capacitor blew (Which is toxic) and means I now will have to put up with a 4th unit in less than 3 years. I want to say I'm just seriously unlucky but I've seen numerous reviews and discussions on other sites about this same issue, and customers going through 2-7 units in the lifespan of one battery (3-4 years). This unit has numerous flaws from mosfets cracking from being at the upper limit of their rating, to capacitors blowing from once again being stressed to their upper limit, to the PCB itself being of poor quality and resembling a "90's hand-soldered PCB" quoting a review on amazon with photos to match. For the (Pro) badge and this being APC's most expensive consumer household product I find this to be a disgrace and a cash grab more than a renowned product meant to have any vital/important equipment attached to it. Its ONLY saving grace is the connected equipment insurance policy that comes with the product, but what's the point of buying this product if it just increases the likelihood of damaging your equipment? I'm likely never returning to APC unless they can get this hot mess express turned around. I honestly suggest just a high-end surge protector and a high-quality PC power supply, while it sucks that your pc will still shut off unexpectedly, at least it greatly decreases your chances of failing and damaging sensitive, well-made electronics.
Cons: Too Expensive, Part Failure, Low Confidence in 24/7 Uptime

solid hardware for serious equipment

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have regular thunderstorms that have, in the past fried electronics even without being a direct hit. This UPS has the capacity for both my desktops and my NAS – that is online 24/7. In the two weeks since it was installed, we have had 2 storms, one involving a brief lights-out. No effect on the electronics. Also, we have had a more stable cable Internet connection since using the built-in coax surge connection. For the copper ethernet I have it connected to a 70’ run to the front room to protect against near strikes.
The front panel is compact and packed with information. Unfortunately, it is the best information. The APC server/workstation software is not straightforward to get and had limited application. I would suggest opening the interface to selected developers to reach more OS and devices.
Overall it is a solid piece of protection that is very simple to setup. Be aware that there is a hum with something that handles this much VA. But under the desk it won’t be noticeable.
Pros: Ease of Management, High Quality, High Confidence Level in 24/7 Uptime

Great product, exceptional customer service

First impressions – On opening the box, the first thing I noticed was that all packaging is recyclable, bonus points in my book. Taped to the product was a printout of the quality assurance test done at time of manufacture, also impressive. Included are a 3 ft coax cable and a 6+ ft communication cable to connect to your Windows computer to run the PowerChute software which is downloaded from the website.
The UPS power plug is a 45 degree offset so that you can plug it into a regular wall outlet without blocking the other socket; this is extremely useful and seems to be a standard for APC. The cable is 6 ft so is a convenient length. To hook up the battery one of the side panels easily slides down to show two straps used to pull up the battery to plug in the remaining connector. Both features are much easier to use than a previous APC UPS I relied on for many years. There are 6 UPS plus surge outlets, 1 with adapter spacing, and 4 surge only outlets, one with adapter spacing. Ventilation grids are along the top and bottom of both sides. Dimensions are 14” l x 10” h x 4” w so can fit under a large desk but might interfere with your legs.
On connecting the battery and power plug and starting the unit, it goes into a self-test, checking power, battery connection and charge, and load on the system. There is a button to cycle through the displays of input and output voltage, charge, time left on battery, etc. There is also a button to mute the alarm, as well as a software setting to mute by time of day. Conveniently, I had a thunderstorm a few days after plugging my system in. I heard some clicking as the UPS presumably dealt with a slight fluctuation in power, but not enough to record an event. All in all, I’d say this is an excellent product based on my history of using UPS units for about 20 years.
Finally, customer service. It turned out that the product I got originally had a bad battery or connector. I left a message after hours on the website that I had a product problem and first thing the next morning I was contacted by Rebeca in tech support. The initial email had several tests for me to do which I attempted with varying results over a couple of days. As soon as I let her know I hadn’t managed to get any of them to work, she arranged to ship a replacement and send me a label to return the bad item. The service was prompt, professional, and cordial and I would expect that any issues that occur with their products would be handled in the same way. Having good support is as important as having a good product in my opinion and they get five stars from me.

I'm not sure what the one star review is complaining about. We purchased (3) of the BR1000MS for our office and they're all working flawlessly. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a replacement battery available yet.
We don't need one yet... but we like to be prepared...

Perfect Size and Effective

APC has been the leader in UPS power. The BR 1000VA is very well designed and extremely easy to setup. Knowing which outlets are surge protected and battery back-up up is easy, one side is battery, the other is surge only. Although it is a medium size UPS, it has 10 Outlets which 6 are battery back-up. This is very efficient for todays desktop and laptop users. I use it to power my home model/router and printer along with all the necessary accessories attached to my desktop. Highly recommend this product to anyone looking to protect their computers and home electronic devices. Lightweight and easy to storage. Detailed direction included on how to use the product. Very satisfied!
Pros: Energy Efficient, Ease of Management, Good Value, Good Vendor Support, High Confidence Level in 24/7 Uptime

I see little change in this product as compared to my BckUPS Pro 1000 that has been running for over three years with absolutely no problems. I have not had the unit long enough to assess the following previous problem.
The major problem I have will all APC UPS' is the lack of monitor/controlware that would give a much more definitive alert as compared to the 'idiot light' of the older units. This is especially critical for sites, my home office is similar, where computers are in use 24/7 for various reasons.
A major problem here in the Upper Plateau (El Paso, Tx northward through New Mexico) is the micro fine dust that permeates the region that at times (winds over 20mph) can reduce visibility considerably and the higher the winds the greater the reduction and intrusion into all homes irregardless of their 'tightness'.
I have been using APC products since 2001 when I built my own home office inside my just purchased house. However, following an upgrade to your website, all my previous purchases disappeared so there is no way any more to check my purchase history.
I would have to have a lot more information, both of your product and my friends needs before I would recommend any product. However, at the present time, APC seems to have the best UPS' on the market.
