Too Much Formatting Required

I really expected the My Passport for Mac to be ready to use. I selected it because it claimed to be ready for “Time Machine” backups. Unfortunately, I had to reformat the drive in order to accomplish this. Then, in order to “drag and drop” files to the drive, I had to partition it. The My Passport that I purchased several years ago did not require all this formatting.

Easy to set up

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The My passport 2 TB by WD is is a good portable drive I use it on my 10 year old Mac mini because it has a small drive. The drive was easy to set up with the usb wire that was provided. With its 2 terabytes I have plenty of space now for storage. It transfers files pretty quickly. And it small enough to put in your pocket. I recommend it to any one who needs extra room on their computer.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Avoid this brand. All of my files are gone.

All of my files are gone. I'm talking wedding photos, newborn photos, first birthdays, everything. This is inexcusable. I am at complete loss of words. To put your faith in a company with something so priceless, and the only option is: "a replacement device". The native utility app did not fix the problem nor identify the issue. I want them to pay for the files to be recovered. I will continue to post this unless there is some tangible resolution in sight. Contact me.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD My Passport for Mac Portable Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.

There can a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition.

Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

"Windows or macOS Cannot Find My Drive":

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

Don't buy - destroyed my Mac

Since trying to use this product, my Mac's fan has been running nonstop. Even dismounting the drive won't make it stop. Buyer beware.

Not really an apple friendly product

My Passport for Mac? I can't get the data of my old My Passport for Mac anymore and the new one works but transfers very slow. I suspect that the problem is they don't make a cable for thunderbolt. Instead they send you an old USB cable with a USB to USB-c adapter. If it was really for modern Macs they'd have a thunderbolt cable.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear about your user experience with the WD My Passport for Mac and appreciate your time for providing this review.

Slow performance can be caused due to several factors like computer configuration, multiple applications running on the computer while trying to access or backup the data, fragmented disk which may also result in slow computer disk read capability, the total amount of data on a disk and the relative size of each file, encrypted backup or scanning of each file by anti-virus installed in the computer or USB port of the computer with which the drive is connected etc.

Stopping applications and software that use CPU and memory, keeping all the files in a single directory instead spreading them in multiple directories, connecting the drive directly to the USB 3.0 port of the computer and avoiding the USB hub while using the drive, etc. are the recommended steps to enhance the performance of the drive.

As a troubleshooting step, please ensure that the Hard Drive is connected directly on the USB 3.0 port of the computer and the files which you are attempting to copy are not in use by any other program of the computer.

Furthermore, you can also refer to the link suggested below and check for the Theoretical USB Interface Speeds to find out the theoretical speed given by different USB port types.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my second purchase of a WD Passport drive, and I was not disappointed. USB transfer times are excellent and the drive doesn't require a separate power source, so it's perfect if you're a photographer on assignment. The little Case Logic case works great to protect the drive from knocks and dings.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Awesome Storage in a Compact Portable Package
on June 11, 2021

The compact design provides for easy portability of a whopping 5TB in the package. I have two of these drives and alternate them as part of my streaming host. This allows me to load up new material on the "offline" drive, disconnect the "online" drive and sync their contents far quicker than it would take to load offline content to the "online" drive.

User should not wonder if their data is backed up. So secure the owner can't see it or be assured it's transferred?
