Worst Experience Ever - Security Password rejected
on July 18, 2023
Posted by: cps928
I bought the WD 5TB My Passport™ for Mac from Officework in January last year. I've been using it nearly everyday to keep all my important files in this external hard drive in the past 18 months. To my shock the hard drive rejected my password and I have no way to retrieve anything suddenly! Have read through all the support pages in WD website and got the answers about they have no way to recover the encrypted data in the hard drive. The only way is to format it or set a new password but all the data in the drive will gone. There's no constructive solution to help recovering my valuable data and WD just keep their hands off from the problem. Will never buy their products again.

Had 2 Fail in under 2 years
on December 18, 2021
Posted by: asc76
I got this to use as a Time Machine backup drive for my mac, and the first one failed within 3 months. After paying to have it replaced (under warranty I might add), the second one failed within less than a year. Would not recommend it. While they worked, they were just fine, but its the unreliability on TWO of them that makes me write this.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear about your user experience with the WD My Passport for Mac External Portable Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.

There can a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition.

Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under
warranty if necessary.

I got exactly two backups and somehow my Mac could no longer "see" the My Passport, I have to try and reinstall everything to see if I can get Time Machine to work with the device again.

Just terrible
on March 22, 2023

I've never written a review in my life but this hard drive made me so upset by how terrible it has been compared to my other hard drives. Started crashing after a month, now unusable after 3 months. The utility software that runs check ups on the hard drive didn't even work. I've had Lacie hard drives for 6 years with no issues ever. Do not recommend for anyone using a macbook.

We have identified a firmware issue that presents itself in very limited situations and can cause SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, and WD My Passport SSD products to unexpectedly disconnect from a computer.
Full details, including a serial number lookup tool to find out if your product is impacted, can be found on the Firmware Updates for SanDisk & WD Portable SSDs page. https://support-en.wd.com/app/firmwareupdate

Do not buy

y Passport for my MacBook Pro has been a disaster. It was fine until they decided not to support their software. It was loaded when I registered the HD but it is dead now and I am left with nothing but the reminder that I haven't backed up my computer in over 90 days. I would not recumbent this company, Not with this kind of support or business plan.

Hello,

We are sorry to hear about your user experience with WD My Passport for Mac and appreciate your time providing this review and bringing this matter to our concern.

There could be a few reasons why a drive is not being recognized. Drive partition corruption can also result in unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation..

No matter what I do this MyPassport won't show up on my Mac or in Disk Utility!! I've bought two of them on separate occasions and BOTH don't work. This has been so frustrating, I've watched the Youtube videos and tried so many things it shouldn't be this difficult.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I been using this to backup my photos and files from my Mac, I do have to say that I do get a bit confused at using it at times, however I just do the automatic feature. I also like that I dont have to keep it plugged in all the time.
