I already use a western digital external hard drive. As my Mac’s internal drive is almost full, I wanted to transfer items to an other external hard drive. Of course, I chose the same brand as my other reliable drive, the Western Digital My Passport for Mac.

I was disappointed that the hard drive did not come with a direct usb-c to usb-c cable like my last one did, but an old cable plus an adapter. It also did not come with a case and again my last one — the exact same thing — did. Not sure why the changes but feels like it’s an older model then.

Had a different vendor’s hard drive. I took it back when I got to the part where the instructions said to reformat my computer’s file system to....wait for it....Microsoft’s file system. ThisWD, by contrast, is truly “plug and play.” Works on my latest Apple Air, iPads (old and newer), and three other Mac devises. (No. I am not getting Paid by WD!). (Full disclosure: Everything is now on there, but I have yet to pill anything off. )

Not really an apple friendly product

My Passport for Mac? I can't get the data of my old My Passport for Mac anymore and the new one works but transfers very slow. I suspect that the problem is they don't make a cable for thunderbolt. Instead they send you an old USB cable with a USB to USB-c adapter. If it was really for modern Macs they'd have a thunderbolt cable.

Slow performance can be caused due to several factors like computer configuration, multiple applications running on the computer while trying to access or backup the data, fragmented disk which may also result in slow computer disk read capability, the total amount of data on a disk and the relative size of each file, encrypted backup or scanning of each file by anti-virus installed in the computer or USB port of the computer with which the drive is connected etc.
Stopping applications and software that use CPU and memory, keeping all the files in a single directory instead spreading them in multiple directories, connecting the drive directly to the USB 3.0 port of the computer and avoiding the USB hub while using the drive, etc. are the recommended steps to enhance the performance of the drive.
As a troubleshooting step, please ensure that the Hard Drive is connected directly on the USB 3.0 port of the computer and the files which you are attempting to copy are not in use by any other program of the computer.
Furthermore, you can also refer to the link suggested below and check for the Theoretical USB Interface Speeds to find out the theoretical speed given by different USB port types.
