Replacement to my 2008 Western Digital Passport

I really like how small and light the Western Digital Passport is. The storage capacity is perfect for an external drive to my laptop. It was very easy and quick to set up, basically plug in and go. My only complaint is that it doesn't respond well once it goes to sleep. My old one was very quick to respond, all you had to do was click on the drive in Finder and was good to go. This new one doesn't respond, the only way to "wake" it up is to unplug/replug it in.

WD My Passport - A great backup drive for Mac user
on January 24, 2022

I purchased a "My Passport for Mac" to replace an earlier version of the product that worked well for 5 years. Installation of the HD and WD software was simple enough. Apple Time Machine software initially performed the backup routine but stopped working after a day or two. It could be that I created a software conflict between WD software and Time Machine during set-up or the something else. In any event, deleting the WD software from my Apple HD fixed the problem and the WD backup works flawlessly in the background. I would definitely buy the WD My Passport drive again.

Too Much Formatting Required

I really expected the My Passport for Mac to be ready to use. I selected it because it claimed to be ready for “Time Machine” backups. Unfortunately, I had to reformat the drive in order to accomplish this. Then, in order to “drag and drop” files to the drive, I had to partition it. The My Passport that I purchased several years ago did not require all this formatting.

I like this product. My only problem was the cable that came with needed to be replaced. WD is in the process of replacing it. I had it set up with Time Machine, and often Time Machine couldn't find the disk. This is the only time I've ever had a problem with any WD external hard drive. I use them all time.

Slow and not a great product. Unit sticks, drags and has not recorded some of the information I needed to store.

Had 2 Fail in under 2 years

I got this to use as a Time Machine backup drive for my mac, and the first one failed within 3 months. After paying to have it replaced (under warranty I might add), the second one failed within less than a year. Would not recommend it. While they worked, they were just fine, but its the unreliability on TWO of them that makes me write this.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear about your user experience with the WD My Passport for Mac External Portable Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.

There can a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition.

Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under
warranty if necessary.
