SO100 Great serger for the price!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This machine is well built and feels solid. I like the suction cups on the bottom which keeps it secure and steady. It comes partially threaded so all you have to do is tie your spool thread to the existing thread and pull it through. If you have trouble doing that and have to rethread, don't worry, follow the thread map. A quick guide is actually on the inside of the machine front cover and the illustrations are very clear. Just be sure you do it in the order the illustration and manual suggests! One feature I love is it has an interior light so visibility is great for threading. The handwheel is a little tight to manually turn. I tried all the stiches with 4, 3, & 2 threads and left, right needle and both needles. The overlock stitches were all beautiful and perfect and the rolled hem will be especially useful for my hobby. You can also slide off the flat bed extension for free arm stitching. The machine runs a little loud but not overbearing. In my experience, they all run loud. Overall, I think this is a great little machine. A good deal!

Solid Serger

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I will begin by contrasting the S0100 with the ProFinish serger I already own. Internally they are the same machine. This is a good thing because the Profinish is a fine serger. I am not going to say too much about the sewing capabilities of either machine except that they both are fast and efficient, producing well-formed stitches when properly tensioned. Interestingly, the S0100 sews a perfect 4-thread overlock stitch with all tensions set exactly at three. This is the way it should be, but I have to tweak the Profinish a bit to get the same result. The main differences between these machines are cosmetic, and most of them are positive.
The greatest positive new feature on the S0100 is the LED light inside the looper area. When you open the door to this area the light comes on. No longer do you have to hold a flashlight in your mouth to work with the loopers or thread the needles. One caveat with respect to the door to the looper area is that when it is open the machine will not run. This is probably a safety feature to prevent harm to a child if the pedal is accidently pressed while his fingers are in the looper mechanism, and, in that regard, is a good thing. I like to run out a chain with the door open after clearing a rat nest from the finger to make sure everything is as it should be, but I can live with the safety feature. Actually, you can over-ride this feature with a thin pencil, but nobody is recommending that. One last new feature in the looper area of the S0100, which ranks right up there with the LED light, is the large tweezer attached to the door. It is a brilliant idea. I actually use the tweezer, rather than my clumsy fingers or the point of the scissor, to thread because it is right at hand.
The S0100 is a much sleeker looking machine with smooth lines. The flat bed extension gives up a little surface area at the corners with this smoothing, but you are not going to miss it. The extension is easier to remove than the one on the Profinish. This next point probably does not matter to anybody but me. The on/off switch and power cord socket are reversed on the S0100. The location where I use the machine makes it awkward to reach around the cord to toggle the switch. That is pretty nit-picky, but I mention it for completeness.
I should have discussed the manual first since we all know that you always read the manual of a new product before using it. Singer puts the manual online which makes this easy. I was able to read the manual before the machine arrived. I held the manual till last because I wanted to open with the S0100’s positive features. The manual is a major disappointment. I really like the drawings to describe the parts and demonstrate the threading. They are much clearer than the photographs used in the ProFinish manual. As good as the drawings are they are over-shadowed by the deficit of the Stitch Table. Once you know how to thread the machine the only reason to return to the manual is to look up the settings for a specific stitch. Good luck with that. Many of the tension settings have only the capital letter N. What does the N refer to? Maybe I am missing something here, but I think somebody did a poor job on this table. It gets worse. Look at number 10, the narrow 3-thread flat lock stitch. Forget that the entry says to use the left needle (I believe it should be the right needle for a narrow flat lock), the numbers are wrong. You are never going to pull the ladder open with an 8.5 tension on the needle thread. Also, why is the order of the tensions Y, R, G, B? That is intuitively backwards. I think it even messed up the person writing the manual because in this number 10 entry it shows a dash, no thread, in the upper looper, R, and 0 tension on the right needle, G, which is not even in the machine. Every other entry indicates that the writer is assuming that the headers are B, G, R, Y given the location of the dashes. There are still other problems, e.g. the narrow 3-thread flat lock will still not work with a 5 tension on the needle thread. Also, the wide 3-thread flat lock entry is number 14. Why are not these two stitches together? This is a real missed opportunity for Singer because they went to a lot of trouble to define fabric types and set up a fine tuned grid. Sadly, they filled the grid with garbage. Fortunately, this manual can be fixed with a thorough proof read by somebody expert at serger stitches. In the meantime download the ProFinish manual in addition to the S0100 one. They are essentially the same machine and the stitch examples in the Profinish manual seem accurate.
In summary, notwithstanding the manual, the S0100 is a wonderful, functional serger. It has many new thoughtful features that make it easier to use and more productive. With proper tension settings the S0100 sews any stitch in its repertoire beautifully. It is not capable of a cover stitch which is why I am saving up for a Pro5, but that is another story.

Good but no user’s manual

After researching between a brother serger and this one, Singer came out on top. Four stars because it doesn’t come with a physical manual. You have to download it. This was a gift for my mom, an older woman who is not computer savvy. I mean, come on Singer! For the price we pay you can’t include a user’s manual?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review of the Singer S0100 Serger. Along with many other home product manufactures around the world, Singer has joined the 'Green Initiative'. As a part of the ‘Green Initiative’, we do not have physical copies of the manual available to ship. We too only have access to the digital copies on our website. Where is it??

The only problem is no instructions. We had to call to find out how to locate the accessories, and then use the internet to figure out how to open the compattment. Okay with the internet instructions but when your initial reaction to opening the box is "why didn't they send the accessories", well...... even just a small, "here's how to find everything" would help, with a link to a manual.
