Great Laptop - with one issue on the OLED Screen

I really like this laptop and I'm happy I bought it. I went all out this time with the RTX 5090, Ultra 9 275HX, 64GB RAM, Gen 5 1TB SSD (careful, the 2TB is gen 4), 240hz HDR OLED screen, Win 11 Pro, etc... I'm upgrading from an older Omen 17 with a 2080 (non max-q) from 2019, and this is a huge improvement.
What I like:
- USBC charging - I don't have to lug the adapter everywhere I go if I'm not planning on gaming. I can use my 65W phone charger even if I want to for low power usage
- OLED screen: This screen is beautiful, seriously. Cyberpunk 2077 looks incredible on this screen. But it does have a downside (see below). It can also get both brigher and dimmer than my older gaming laptop screen
- Not super heavy, but not light either. Ligher than my older laptop which is a plus
- I can just about max out most of my games which is awesome to do in a laptop.
- Full RBG keyboard is fun to be able to control all the keys. Last laptop had 4 zone RGB which was okay, but this has more control
- Advanced Optimus. Hardware mux between GPU and integrated CPU GPU for battery savings. Last laptop got 45 mins of battery life, even new. I can easily run this for 2-3 hours which is a massive gain from the last one.
- Easy to add another m.2 nvme drive - I added another 2TB SSD (gen 4) to the laptop because 1TB is not enough these days. From my reading, there is only one gen5 SSD slot and one gen4. The 5 requires you to remove the entire heatsink assembly while the 4 does not, so plan your options accordingly.
What I don't like:
- Biggest issue: OLED screen flicker - this one drives me insane. Especialy with the integrated graphics, the OLED flickers in darker light which is a huge PITA for something like writing code in VSCode or browsing at night. I've tried tweaking VRR, some of the power saving options, etc... but I cannot find the sweet spot for this screen. One the dedicated GPU, flicker is way less of an issue, if at all. I don't think I regret the OLED, but I did not realize how big of a frustration this would be.
- The fans are loud. Much louder than the older laptop when playing games. Though, you can overide this to be quieter - just turn down settings or you'll throttle thermally pretty fast
- No more "cool mode" profile on the OMEN gaming hub. I liked that setting when actually using this as a laptop on my lap, but now my only way to manage this is to create a custom fan curve, and it's a pain to do that, and requires you to be on "unleashed" mode rather than balanced/eco.
No regrets buying this. Biggest bummer for me is the OLED flicker. This is my first OLED screen, so I had no idea this was even a common issue with these types of screens. Beautiul, but that's annoying. So if you use dark-mode apps at night, you'll definitely notice that too. If that's going to bother you, either switch to the dedicated GPU with VRR turned off, or just get the non-OLED screen counterpart.

I purchased this computer to use as an all around work and gaming setup. I run Autodesk Fusion and so far this has been a huge upgrade for simulation, although I will note that I still can't run sim accuracy above 80% on complicated geometry, which may be more of a Fusion problem... I have also played a handful of games from Xbox gamepass and I haven't had any problems. My only complaint so far is the system trys to use the hyperX mouse hardware as the default for camera and microphone for apps like Microsoft Teams.

CPU runs way too hot.

Its a love hate right now. The laptop needs something done as it runs too hot when gaming. I am getting 200f/93c on the cpu, with a cooling pad. I am getting thermal throttling in games. Even professional reviews online say the same thing. Several have swapped the hp thermal paste for real liquid metal and it lowered temps 10+ c. I won't do that since it voids the warranty. I personal think HP should allow people to send it back and they replace the thermal material for real liquid metal for free.
My only complaint with the design is trackpad is cheap. I want a larger glass track pad for this price.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What stands out the most is the cooling capabilities. The laptop is on the heavier side, but it doesnt get hot and has self cleaning fan tech i would chose this laptop over the rest. All of the other gaming laptops ive tried got too hot and only lasted a couple years due to the extreme heat. I believe this laptop will last a long time and is a beast of a pc
