DONT BUY THE 550 Dymo Printer!
on May 18, 2023
Posted by: Shadia
it's terrible that Dymo force us to buy only DYMO labels and not generic. I bought a box of Dymo labels and turns out they are not the new generation so they don't work. I had the 450 for years and worked fine and now this 550 is just giving me a hard time and making me waste my work time.

Totally not recommended
Can only use their original label, pretending an ease of use but it only narrows your options. Close source spirit, still don't know why my boss chose to buy this ---Profanity---.
Go figure what label works with this exact printer, the website is a an amazing maze to a simple question.
Avoid at all cost.

Too limited as it doesn't take third-party labels
on May 4, 2023

Dymo doesn't offer the label size I need and the nearest one is too big - so I thought I could use third-party labels but tough luck. I know where you come from in terms of business model but it's not okay. I've returned the printer and you've lost a customer due to this product until you update it to be more useful and accept custom label sizes and third-party consumables. It's easier and cheaper to have my labels printed by an external supplier rather than doing it in-house with your product.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Terrible Buisness

I've use the Dymo SDK in our software to print labels to run our business for many years. We use many 450s and 450 turbo printers throughout our company. Since the 450s are discontinued, we bought a 550 to add a printer. The labels that we print are custom for our products and packaging. We have used them for years and the SDK supports the label length setting to support the custom labels. Now this printer won't accept our labels so we can't label our products or run our business without considerable unplanned cost and disruption to modify our software to use a different printer. I called support and they told me that there is no solution as they refuse to make custom labels. No Warning from Dymo, no solution.

New sadly doesn't mean improved
on April 6, 2023

I have used multiple Dymo LabelWriters over the years and have loved them. But it seems like with each new printer and software update, they get worse in terms of label compatibility and the software becomes less intuitive and harder to use. Very disappointing. My 450 that I had used for years suddenly stopped working, so I replaced it with a 550, and found that the label I used - a 3.5" x 1 7/8" large address label - isn't compatible with the new printer. And it appears that the only label that is of similar height is 4" long and therefore can't be used for a file folder, which means I have to swap out rolls of labels if I want to go from labeling files to printing a shipping label. So once again, I got a new product with less functionality. Dymo, it's time to stop screwing up what made your product good to start with. Improvements have to actually improve usability.

Hi Amy,

We apologize our product has not met your expectations. Our DYMO 5 series printers have been designed to work specifically with our genuine DYMO labels to prevent issues like excessive feeding, label jams and misaligned printing. This 5 series printers works with all the same sizes as LabelWriter 450 but works only with labels which are manufactured after April 2020 (RFID chip is introduced into label rolls from April 2020 and they are detected by NF readers in 5 series printers). 11/8 x 31/2 is still compatible with LabelWriter 550. However, your feedback is valuable for us to improve ourselves.

If you are still having issues, please reach out to us via our website or through LiveChat. We’re available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 5pm Eastern Time.

Thank you!

Don't Buy It!

I got mine yesterday, and it's going back today! I've used a friend's 450, and I have 10 rolls of generic labels. I know it said I would have to use Dymo labels, but HP claims that about their toner and it's not true. I print too many price tags for that crap. I don't care how many labels are left and that nonsense! I care about it being cost effective, which it IS NOT.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!!
on March 31, 2023

I just got the 550, because the 450 was impossible to find used. I have only used the 450 and I understand why it was the superior model. I was trying to save some cost on office supplies, but this completely negates that as you can ONLY use Dymo paper. Not just that the printer will work ~best~ with Dymo paper, no no it will ONLY work if you have Dymo paper. So unless you have an unlimited budget.... I would not recommend.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

label issues

I am so unhappy that this printer only takes dymo labels. It's really ridiculous that you cannot use the variety of labels that are created and perfectly compatible. Definitely did not have the customer in mind and I will definitely be purchasing a different printer as soon.
