DO NOT BUY THE 550 MODEL

Our Division has 100's of Dymo printers. I recently needed to replace my printer, so I chose the 550. Now I am unable to use any of the Dymo 30256 shipping labels, and the 550 model is the only model that does not recognize them.

Hello.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.
We would like to inform you that LabelWriter 5 series printers are compatible with all DYMO Labels manufactured after April 2020.
To determine if your labels are compatible with the LabelWriter 5 series, please check the packaging or the core of the labels. If the packaging is blue with two black dots next to the barcode or green with the recycling sign at the left bottom corner of the front part of the package, then the labels are compatible. Additionally, if there is a DYMO logo on the core of the labels, they are compatible with the LabelWriter 5
If you have any more questions, please reach out to us via our website or through LiveChat. We’re available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 5pm Eastern Time.
I bought it for labeling of chemicals in a research lab. Except for content, date labeling is crucial. I chose this printer since it was said to have the option of automatic date labeling. However, they do not offer ISO 8601 standard as an option which is completely unbelievable. I contacted Dymo's support, but despite the tiniest request for update, they could not do nothing but "forward" my request to their software department without further explanations or updates. Choose another company/printer if you need decent date labeling.

Hello.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us please be aware this information will be forwarded to the appropriate department for further review.
The LabelWriter 550 printer has automatic label recognition of labels so you always know the size, type, and number of labels remaining, and not automatic date recognition.

Horrible customer experience that label rolls have a rfid chip in them and sometimes work and sometimes don't. Using only Dymo labels is fine if they worked 100% of time. Proof that this isn't working for customers is that its second on the call recording when you call support. This idea is costing Dymo more than just allowing generic labels. I'm technically savy and this is a nightmare for my business.

If your labels are compatible, please power cycle the printer by removing the power, labels, and USB cable. Press the power button 15 times. Re-connect the power, insert the labels making sure they are aligned all the way to the left and the perforations are on your left side. Press the forward button to feed one label then connect the USB cable and try to print a label.
Furthermore, if the steps do not work, we recommend cleaning the printer sensors by following the step-by-step instructions on our Help Center. Then set your computer setting region to the United States and Uninstall and reinstall DYMO Connect Software version 1.4.3.

So this purchase was a fail... been using Dymo printers for over a decade for multiple check-in and check-out systems regarding the care of minors. Dymo 450 series printers are nearly impossible to find as they are an older series AND the new 550 series require Dymo manufactured labels with an NFC chip in them, or they won't work. So all the discontinued 450 series are being snatched up to avoid having to use the NFC chips. I have dozens of rolls of labels that are useless now. So much for an upgrade.
The actual setup was simple. Download software, plug in printer, discover the heartbreaking business ethics of Dymo through error messages that your labels are second rate citizens in relationship to theirs. Digital Rights Management (DRM) didn't go well for inkjet and laser printers, what makes someone think it'll go well for thermal printers? The marketing of "automatic label recognition" is a rouse - other brands do that without NFC.
Now I have to decide which is the better paperweight - a 550 printer or all the rolls of generic labels. Plan of action - find a used 450 series, finish my stock of labels, then shift to a new thermal printer brand that may cost more up front for the hardware but allows for third party labels. Dymo brand labels are 4x the price of generic.
Pros - it powers up and communicates with the computer, network plug Cons - massive power brick for such a small printer, DRM requirement on labels makes third party labels useless,

I am very, very frustrated with this model of label printer. Our organization has been using the 450 model with some hiccups but nothing compared to the 550. First was the label issue - we have to buy only dymo brand labels which are four times the cost of a generic brand. I get that dymo wants the label business, but don't gouge your customers. Second - it next to impossible to get our computers and program to detect these printers. We've installed, ran updates, etc... etc.... We are government funded so have very limited budgets. Will try a more expensive label printer - more upfront cost, but if I can get it working and use less expensive labels it will be a win in the long run. Dymo, you are ruining your reputation with this model.

Hello.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.
We recommend using DYMO authentic labels as they reduce issues such as misaligned printing, excessive feeding, and label jams. We also guarantee that our labels will provide you with the best user experience.
To assist you in resolving this problem, we recommend that you thoroughly uninstall the DYMO Software and then reinstall the DYMO Connect Software version 1.4.3. Please remember to unplug your printer's USB cable from your computer's connection throughout this process. Visit dymo.com> Support > Dymo Help Center> Software > How to thoroughly uninstall DYMO Software for additional in-depth instructions on how to perform clean uninstall and reinstallation.
Additionally, we recommend directly connecting your printer's USB port to your computer after the entire process. As USB hubs and adapters slow down communication between the printer and the computer, our printers are incompatible with them.
If you are still having issues (If you have more questions or feedback), please reach out to us via our website or through LiveChat. We’re available Mon.-Fri. 9 am - 5 pm Eastern Time.
I loved the Dymo 450 and used it for years. Unfortunately, I thought I was upgrading with the 550 Turbo and it turned out to be a bust when it forces you to use their labels. I'll be looking for a used 450. So many 1 star reviews.
