5XL doesn't work with legacy Dymo Labels

Purchased the Dymo LabelWriter5XL to go into a new office we added as we have several 4XL's as well as 450 turbos all over the organization and love them. Didn't know that Dymo changed the lables to include an RFID label on the roll so that they can prevent non-Dymo labels from being used in the machine. Fair enough, except I have a stockpile of Genuine OEM Dymo labels that I purchased in bulk some time ago that will not work in the new device. This is a Keurig fiasco all over again. To Dymo's credit, when I called in, they offered to mail me a roll to replace the one roll I had in my hand that I confirmed was authentic; however, I'm not doing this with all of the stockpile. I am in the process of returning the 5XL and for the first time in almost 10 years, we are looking for a new label printer manufacturer to meet our needs. Don't get me wrong, the new label concept of drop the roll in and the printer changing the labels automatically for me sounds great; but when you are prohibited from using DYMO labels in the DYMO label printer.. there is a problem with that. In my opinion, if you purchase a piece of hardware, you should be able to use it for anything (legally) you want. While we primarily use authentic DYMO labels in our machines, there are some specialty labels that we use for events in our older machines and create custom labels. This "new" technology prohibits even thinking about that. Very Sad DYMO. I sincerely hope you rethink this business strategy.

Frustrating

It is an extremely frustrating unreliable printer. I've wasted so many labels. To top it all off it's now recently displaying a flashing light that indicates the rolls isn't aligned correctly. I've follow every single step for it to reject the genuine Dymo rolls used. I just don't get why something so basic has so many issues.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Please try power cycling the device to resolve the issue by removing the power adapter, labels, and USB cable from the printer and then pressing the power button 15 times. Connect the power, turn the printer on and then insert the labels. Please make sure the label is aligned all the way to the left and that the inner core of the roll is white with DYMO written in blue.

Buy ONLY if you're looking to be frustrated

This printer works about 10% of the time. The rest of the time is spent troubleshooting. The printer has trouble recognizing it's own labels and will lead to you trying the same thing over and over and over and over with customer service to no avail. Strange that a printer company would create a printer that only has one job, to print, and then design it so that it doesn't do that one thing. I am using a MacBook Pro. Bought it for shipping label printing. Followed all the instructions to a T. Still no joy. Save yourself the time and buy a different brand.

Works well, BUT…

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Dymo label printer works well and prints everything as it should. Setting up was a little confusing for me but I’m not very technologically savvy. I’m not very happy about the fact that I have to buy Dymo brand labels, I love to bargain shop and having to buy name brand labels is not for me. Unless I find a really good sale, im afraid this will just end up being an expensive paper weight. Bad move on Dymo’s part. It’s sad because the printer seems to be pretty nice.

High quality

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a high quality, easy to use label maker. The driver software was simple and quick to download, so only took a few minutes to have this up and running. There’s a lot of flexibility with creating the labels – you don’t have to follow a template – and can easily add words or images in a variety of fonts anywhere you’d like on the label. I love that this one accommodates extra wide labels. The one think to keep in mind is that you have to buy the DYMO authentic labels to use with it, but these DYMO labels seem really high quality, with no ink smudging, so that seems worth it to me.

Easy setup, can’t register

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We were hoping to use this to create shipping labels to return parts easier.
From the start I was impressed by how easy it was to un box and set up. The instructions are simple and easy to understand.
Downloading the required applications on the computer was a breeze.
Registering the product was next to impossible. If you can’t register you can’t set up the printer to the program on the computer. The webpage continues to say it’s unavailable. For days.
From what I can tell just practicing on the program, it will be incredibly easy to type up labels, with different options of fonts, styles, etc.
if I could register it, I’m sure my review would be 4-5 stars.

The labels that came with the printer do not work. I was told by customer support, that with the new software update all the labels I purchased for this item will not work.

no 5XL driver for Mac on Dymo Support website!

there is no driver for Mac, the printer uses a generic driver however it often totally fails to connect thru Ethernet.
