Less features, more money out of your wallet.

The main changes from the 4XL to this: The 4XL worked on a network if you got the very inexpensive network adapter (called a server but it cost next to nothing) that way everybody in our office was able to use the label printer. Now everybody must buy their own. That's not value for the customer Dymo! Second change, the 4XL worked on anybody's generic 4" x 6" labels. The 5XL's work only with Dymo's which cost 10x more than anybody else's and don't believe that baloney about needing Dymo quality. Its a white paper label with an adhesive backing. I've used lots of cheap knock offs and saved huge money for years - now this big money grab. This is a downgrade, straight up.

The LabelWriter 5XL is not compatible with servers but it has a LAN port for LAN network connectivity. The printer is only compatible with DYMO authentic labels to reduce issues such as excessive feeding, misaligned printing and label jams.

Only works with new labels.

I bought this today and converted from a 450 to the 5XL. The rolls I had laying around from that one will not work on the 5XL or apparently with any 5 Series. The 5 Series only works with the new RFID marked rolls and will lock you out from printing on your older rolls.

Is there a negative star I can give?!? I've been through 3 of these. The first time it just quit working, wouldn't turn on. I chalked it up to the fact we've had it for a few years and we use it a lot, just bought a new one. Next one started registering a paper jam when there was no jam. Called the help line, they insisted there Must be a jam although there wasn't. They were ZERO help. Out of frustration I threw the printer away and got a different one. Now this one, less than 1 year old and it's doing the same, registering a paper jam. I'm Done. Come pick up your printer.

Not convenient

Does not accept non Dymo 5XL labels… Just to be clear, if you order labels for 4XL it will also not work. To make matters worse, it’s difficult to find 5XL labels. I’ve wasted so much time with this stupid printer.

To clarify, LabelWriter 5 series printers are compatible with all DYMO Labels manufactured after April 2020. If you have labels that were purchased prior to this date, they will only be compatible if:
1. The packaging is blue with two black dots next to the barcode OR 2. The packaging is green with a recycle symbol at the front.
If you do not have the box anymore, you can check the core of the labels for the DYMO logo. If it is present, the labels are compatible with the LabelWriter 5 series printer.

Doesn’t work with Dymo labels (post 2020!) avoid

I bought official Dymo labels only and mine still NEVER works! HUGE WASTE OF TIME! I like to buy the best I can for efficiency and this has been so disappointing.
I would also add that I have spent 3 hours going through DYMO tech support and understand the labels must be Dymo AND printed post 2020 and I have all those boxes checked and the thing never works! Awful. Sending in for warranty and refund.

Labels ONLY from DYMO!!

Absolutely will not accept having a product like this and only buying labels from the manufacture. I'll buy a 450XL now but that will be the last Dymo I purchase.
Ditch the Label Lock-In..
The function of the product is excellent so you will get 5 stars on the rest of the review. Just vexed by labels 10x the price.

Third Party Label Restrictions

By implementing NFC in each roll (added cost and creating more environmental waste) they've created a printer which is not only slow to print but also locked to their labels. Need custom labels for your business? Too bad. It also loves to waste labels every time it powers on, so your overpriced labels just get wasted.

Dymo 5xl printer

Well if troubleshooting every time I print one label and it taking 2 hours to print one label then go ahead and purchase, otherwise, this printer is awful. It takes an hour to troubleshoot every time I print one label.
