Partyboost sucks
on November 20, 2020

The only reason the price on this speaker is so low is because, while it's a great speaker, it has partyboost mode which means you can't connect to any other jbl speaker available. On top of that, it's still on bluetooth 4.2 and gives only slightly more range. Once this is updated to offer connect+ I'll get one to go with my charge 4.

Annoying connection sounds

I couldn't use this device with MacBook Pro together with Magic Mouse/Keyboard for months, and it was finally fixed by a new firmware upgrade. However, whenever I start/stop streaming sound, even if it means simply changing a song on YouTube, I will hear connecting-noise. Also, the speaker slowly increases sound when you start streaming, so if I get a notification (a very short sound), I basically won't hear it. It's just not meant to serve as a computer speaker.

Does not pair with Flip 4!

I went with JBL bluetooth speakers years ago because you are able to pair so many together. I current have 3 and so when one died recently, just thought to get the newest version, the Flip 5. Wrong move as it does not link with the flip 4. The sound is beautiful but I'm returning it and getting another Flip 4 to have stereo sound with my others.

Our JBL Flip 5 has the PartyBoost feature while Flip 4 has Connect +. Due to technology limitations, it isn't possible to pair and connect these two speakers together. As Bluetooth tech improves, so do our portable products. With the PartyBoost, we have worked on improving the Bluetooth range and stability with multiple speaker connections. You can connect Flip 5 with our Boombox 2, Pulse 4, Xtreme 3, and Charge 5.

Amazing Sound, Big Problems with PartyBoost
on December 5, 2020
Posted by: Rad Jeans
I bought a JBL Flip 5 about two months ago. I was blown away by the improvements from the 3 and the 4. It picks up much deeper bass, while not distorting. The mids and highs are decent and the overall soundstage is fluid. Music from indie rock to hip hop sound fantastic. It is a little bigger than it’s predecessors, feels sturdy, and looks even better. It’s a bit heavier and does not take calls, but I don’t mind those changes. I highly recommend this product if you’re only wanting one speaker. I have not had technical issues with a single speaker.
Two speakers is where the disappointment begins. The one sounded so good, and partyboost capability is advertised as a selling point, so why wouldn’t two sound incredible?! They do. I bought another but playing them together has been a frustrating experience. Whether using the JBL connect app or not, they do not link well. It worked the first time, using the app to link them and set to stereo mode. After that they constantly crackle and cut out and cannot be used at all this way.
I have found a workaround, but it’s highly annoying. However, the stereo sound is SO good that I have decided to suffer through it and hope that JBL will repair this and hopefully this fix will help them in figuring out how.
1) From Bluetooth setting Forget both Flips (you may need to have Flips off)
2) Turn flips on and pair to Bluetooth
3) Open the Connect app and let it find devices
4) Choose your mode and click the + to link the 2nd speaker
5) Play music
6) After each listening session you will have to repeat this tedious process.
This occasionally fails as well. Occasionally, it fails at “getting ready” your speaker. You will have to start this process over again.
I have been a loyal JBL customer and have brought many friends to JBL at this point, so this is just so frustrating. I’ve come to expect top quality, even from their “budget” products. I hope they will solve this. If not I am all about checking out UE. I heard their products pair perfect and more quickly. JBL, your great quality has reeled me in and kept me interested but I’m not so won over to not jump ship.

Thanks for taking the time in providing your feedback on our JBL Flip 5. It's recommended that only one speaker is paired with your phone, as the second speaker you'll be using will connect with the speaker that is paired with the phone. You can connect the speakers by clicking on the PartyBoost button on them. You can check out this guide for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FffQDaVdqc0
