I have purchased multiple similar UPS units over the last 20 years or so. They seem to last 2 or 3 years or so at best. Usually after I replace the batteries in the 1-2 year time frame, the electronics fail within a year or so of battery replacement. My last device failed about 5 years ago and I held off replacing it waiting (and hoping) for a new, improved technology that would have more features and last longer. After installing this UPS I realized that it has the same "look and feel" as the older units, but I was encouraged to find that there was software available at no charge from Tripplite that provided monitoring and control capabilities. After installation my enthusiasm tanked; the software is buggy and confusing and the support information on their web site is very limited. I configured the software so that it would shut down the server when the remaining UPS capacity was down to 50% after a power failure. I then tested the configuration and found that even when the remaining power was reduced to 40%, it still did not shut down the server despite having the USB cable connected between the UPS and the server. When I have time, I'll go back and work on this issue again, but I expected the basic functionally to be very 'plug 'n play'.

This is the second time I bought one of these units. I liked the 1st one I bought for my gaming rig, I decided to buy the exact same one to replace an old failing UPS I had my wife's computer on. The only thing i don't like about it is Tripp Lite no longer sends out monitoring software with them. I liked being able to monitor and test my UPS from my PC. Yes, this unit has the LED display on it but it sits on the floor, behind some furniture and I am old and don't want to crawl down on the floor, move the furniture to check it's health.

I purchased this unit for my home office to replace an aging competitor's 750VA unit. The SmartPro was put to the test within the first week when my area experienced a 40 minute power outage. The SmartPro took over instantly and continued to power my connected devices the entire 40 minutes. I couldn't ask for more. A word about the odor some reviewers have complained about - yes the unit did produce a noticeable odor after putting into service, but after about two weeks it is now barely noticeable. The smaller competitor's unit had a similar smell all those years ago, but it fades and you forget about it.

This is a superb piece of equipment at a good price. It is easy to implement. It is quite heavy and does take up significant space. Supplied wires could be longer to accommodate placement. On a rack or on the floor, distance to power and to equipment matters. I give it top ratings nonetheless. Then again, I am yet to suffer my first lengthy power failure.
