varying quality

I recently bought 7 bags of this over the past month. The first two bags were okay, the remaining bags appeared to be mostly used mulch, with pieces of sticks up to 1/2" diameter and 4 inches long, bark, and other hard plant materials. This is not great for many types of vegetables, especially root vegetables such as carrots, because it causes deformed or split roots. There appeared to be very little what I would call dirt--the sand/silt/clay components that I think of as the basis for good soil, along with very fine organic matter. I would love to have a product that is just plain good quality clean dirt.

Disappointed!

I have purchased 28 bags of the herb and vegetable soil. I’m very disappointed. First of all, there is a lot of plastic, glass and other garbage in the soil that I had to fish out. I wouldn’t expect that soil in this price range would have so much garbage and debris in it. The biggest disappointment I have is the amount of grass and weeds that are growing in it. I have filled a 25” tall 4’x4’ raised garden bed with ONLY this soil and am extremely upset with the amount of weeds and grass growing in my garden. It’s like a carpet of green in amongst my plants. I have always used Miracle Grow brand for years (multiple products) and felt that you were a reputable company. I have to say that for the amount of money that we spent, I’m not sure I will continue to purchase this brand.

We are sorry to hear about your experience when using Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Vegetables & Herbs. We take every effort to screen out debris. We would like to gather more information so we can investigate this issue. While the composting process does destroy most of the weed seeds in our soils, the still can be some viable weed seeds after composting. Never ever, ever again! NEVER!

There is absolutely nothing about this product that in any way can be considered "garden soil" unless you count large tree parts, bug larvae, thousands of spider mites, fungus, and gnats as soil. NEWSFLASH: IT ISN'T! I also hope you dont mind the smell of rotting sewage because thats exactly what this stuff smells like. I bought 6 bags of this garbage... 6 bags... and every single one was full of every nasty fungus and bug I do my absolute best to keep out of garden and smelled like death. My yard has been invaded with gnats, spider mites, and fungus - there is absolutely nothing able to control an infestation this large from just 6 bags. Everything I've worked so hard for this season has been destroyed and I'm now faced with burning the whole plot to get rid of it. This was the first time ever buying Miracle Grow Garden Soil and you can bet it's my last for ever using anything Miracle Grow! Do not waste your money on this garbage! I'm not the only person this has happened to either since there are plenty of reviews exactly like this one all over the Internet about MG.
Never had a problem with cheap-o garden soil from the dollar store. Never had a problem with ridiculously-expensive and stinky custom blended soil from yard depots (didn't smell half as bad either). This garbage? Worst mistake I ever made!!
Cons: Messy, Didn't work as expected, Bad Odor, Problem with label, Difficult to use, not soil, full of garbage, full of bugs and fungus, smells like rotten flesh, poor quality, the bugs and fungus in this garbage killed my plan

We apologize for all the trouble that our product has caused you. All organic soil products and mulches manufactured by Miracle-Gro are natural based and do not contain any pesticides to limit insects and other organisms. The raw materials used in these products are produced in natural environments and therefore contain many microorganisms and insects, which are present in nature.

Soil products are generally composted to reduce insect populations by natural heating processes. Most plant damaging insects are controlled in this way, but are not eliminated. In fact, it is entirely possible that insects can lay their eggs in raw material stockpiles or even packaged products (through tiny bag vent holes) long after the heating phase of the composting has passed.

We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please contact us to see what can be done. You may visit our contact page by clicking on the following link: http://tinyurl.com/noc5mcg

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this garden soil in two ways. First I had a couple small areas needing the grass patched. I used about 1/3 the bag here for grass seeding and it worked just fine. Next I wanted to put some into the soil under a few tomatoes as I planted my garden this Spring. It allowed me to see if these grew any different than other similar plants. These plants indeed grew a little faster at the start, but of course all tomatoes grow pretty wild once they really get going. Impossible to detect if the overall yield was any better from these plants but it seemed I had tomatoes a little earlier. Good soil like this helps.
Pros: Effective, Quality

I’ve had a small vegetable garden for over 30 years, and I replaced about 6 inches of soil with MG garden soil for vegetables & herbs this spring. I’ve gotten the biggest yield ever!! My neighbors are envious.

Gnat-infected house is driving me crazy!

I've purchased Miracle Gro Garden Soil for Vegetables & Herbs for many years and have had great success. I buy at least 6-7large bags every year for my 23+ pots of herbs, veggies and flowers. Unfortunately, for the past two years my house has been besieged by gnats. This year, I repotted ALL my plants using your product. My house is full of gnats again! I wish you could come and have the lovely experience of having gnats everywhere, flying in your mouth and nose, flying around any meal you're trying to make or eat! It's driving me crazy! Please clean up your product and get rid of those gnats. Yes, I've filled all my containers with over 1.5 inches of sand to try to rid my house of the gnats. They persist! I am so frustrated as I use my herbs all through the winter months (growing inside during Wisconsin winters). Now, I have to toss ALL my herbs out and I am really upset. You not only cost me the price of your product and all the herbs that I've grown for years, but you cost me the flavor of all the herbs I use in my cooking. You can do much better than this! AND, if I didn't experience gnats all the previous years I've used your product, WHAT do you do to your product to create such a hellish experience of a gnat-infested house?!
Cons: Didn't work as expected

Convenient High Quality Product

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] What I like best about Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Vegetables and Herbs is that it contains dark rich soil with hardly any foreign materials like sticks or stones. A fertilizer is included in the formulation saving me from the hassle of mixing and watering new plants with fertilizer and saving me the cost of the fertilizer. I'm never sure if I am over or under fertilizing but with this product the correct amount of fertilizer is present in the soil. As to whether the vegetables and herbs will be fertilized for the next three months as claimed remains to be seen. I can say that it has been one week since I planted my vegetables and herbs and they are thriving. Not one has suffered any ill effects from being transplanted.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Good Directions, Value, Quality

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The growing season is just starting in Wisconsin, but this product seems very easy to use and the plants are responding very well to it so far. Vegetables planted in this soil seem to be doing better than those planted in regular soil.
