A few features short of amazing

At my local camera store, I put the SD4000 on a head to head with the two competitors I am not allowed to mention in this review. The SD4000 was the clear winner in macro and indoor shooting with sharper, cleaner images. The SD4000 was also the fastest on and between shots by far. Outdoors and in high contrast settings, the canon was good but not in comparison as the others had either HDR or auto bracketing. For example, a beautiful sky with clouds are totally blown out since the buildings below were so bright. The auto shots from the SD4000 were about the same as the the others on auto. iContrast can simply not compete for the better dynamic range of others.
The minimal external controls were better than I had feared though I would still prefer more controls and even a customizable button or two (like most of its competitors). Still, I would not rate the controls as easy.
The SD4000, with its superior image quality in low light would be an instant purchase BUT it needs a few features added to its firmware to be competitive with other BSI CMOS cameras with great image quality.
There are many small things I would have liked, but no camera is perfect. I've got it down to 1 must have feature and one want-but-don't-need feature that kept me from walking out of the store with this camera: I need auto-bracketing or an auto HDR function and I'd really like RAW or even superfine. CHDK will eventually let this camera do both of those things, so why wait! Canon, get on this!
After the miserable experience and image quality that was the SD980, I swore off canons but the SD4000 was and is compelling. Without auto bracketing (and RAW) however, I plan on waiting to see a soon to be released competitor before making an expensive decision.
Canon, if you are listening, update your firmware to include auto exposure bracketing and you've got yourself a sale.
For now, it's a great macro and indoor camera that would be the best in town all around if it only had a better dynamic range.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, macro!!
Cons: Dim LCD, Missing features/settings, Difficult to use, Complicated controls/menu, no auto bracketing, no raw, no hdr, no manual focus, no max iso setting

This camera is loaded with nice features usually not available in small cameras. I'm able to set the aperture or shutter myself, has a nice fisheye feature.
This camera is loaded with user adjustable and friendly features. I give it a 5 star!
Missing is the ability to adjust both aperture and shutter simultaneouly? Maybe canon will have a software upgrade for this in the near future.
.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

This point and shoot is great. It has the shutter speed of my EOS in my opinion it's the fastest elph canon offers. Pictures are extreemly sharp and you have so many options to manipulate the shot. I had the SX210IS but returned it because it couldn't record the picture fast enough while taking action shots. The slow motion video is very cool too and regular video is sharp and has good audio. I wish canon would make a 1080x720 HD point and shoot this is 720dpi which is great but there are other manufactures with 1080dpi res for the same price. Overall great camera love canon.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

video mode goes out of focus
on December 26, 2010

Be aware! Video mode on SD4000 has problem with auto focus. If you don’t care about shooting video with this camera, buy it. Simple birthday party video where people move slowly will go out of focus every several seconds. I couldn’t believe this at first. I read manual, tried all settings, no luck. Then, I went on several forums to find out other people have same problem.
I own two other Canon cameras (Rebel and small SD1000) and two DV camcodcers, no problem. This camera should never made it out with such poor auto-focus in video mode.
Cons: video mode goes out of focus

the greatest camera in the world.

i received this camera as a present this morning from my dad. this camera is out of this world, brilliant. the shutter speed is so quick and the picture quality is beautifully crisp. the low light feature is pretty cool and the slow motion video is so much fun to play around with. i LOVE this camera SO MUCH i just can't seem to put it down. the camera also has this coating around the camera that makes it feel very comfortable to hold. the "auto" feature located on the top of the camera takes VERY crisp and detailed photos. this camera makes me look like a professional!
Pros: crisp pictures, slow mo video

Buyer Beware - not Canon's best atttempt

Ok - I have been a Canon Fan for a long time - going way back on the early realeases of their SD line. I have had numberous ELPH's - and I can honestly say besides its excellent low light capability - the rest of the features and picture quality = leave me wanting.
I have had problems with the camera trying to focus, startup delays, color satuartion, and flash "bleach". Too the camera just does not feel like a canon. Someone it feels very cheap. When compared to my older DS990IS - the 4000 just comes up short.
I am not done with Canon - I think they still have some of the best technology on the market - but need to focus...all puns intented back on quality photos not just new features, colors, and names to keep me on board.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Still and Video Performance
on May 30, 2010

Good still image quality in low light. Disappointing video color saturation, sharpness, image noise in low light, and fair amount of recorded camera noise even in noisy environment such as recording a street scene. Have experienced better videos under similar conditions with comparable priced products in its class. The .mov format video quality is not as good as the avchd ones
Would like to have a higher resolution LCD.
Good portable size and build quality.
Easy to use user interface.
Pros: durable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, good low light performance for stills only
Cons: poor video quality

Focus is hyper active
on February 17, 2011

Overall, the still photography is fine. I am very disappointed with the focus when taking videos. Trying to film Hong Kong Harbor during the nightly Light Show, the focus jumped out every time a new light was turned on or off, leaving me with video out of focus for more than half of the show. Trying to film children's birthday party, focus jumped out every time new light entered the lens. I have to say, the camera is virtually useless for video, it is out of focus most of the time!
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD
Cons: terrible video focus
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
