A great decision, albeit a little pricey

Although I am not a professional photographer, I do understand the workings of a camera, as well as their many settings and values. This camera, by my opinion, is one of the best (if not the best) point-and-shoot cameras. Comparable to the slightly more expensive S90, this camera fulfills all the needs of a point-and-shoot, from low-light capability (no more flash!) to close-up macro shots in broad daylight. I took this camera out to the beach as my first experience, and WOW! All of the pictures were perfectly exposed, with limited chromatic aberration and clipped highlights. Many camera reviews do not do the camera justice (however they are VERY useful), as one cannot judge how it performs in everyday situations. The build quality, as well as the image quality, is top notch on this just-over-$300 camera. This camera has had many good reviews so far, and I am just another testament to that fact. If you are looking for a higher-end point-and-shoot camera, this is the one. You will not be disappointed.
However, if you are expecting a full manual-mode, go for the S90. The S90 in my opinion was slower in comparison to this speedy piece of machinery.
Pros: great picture quality, excellent exposure, excellent macro, great low light
Cons: no full manual mode

Great Camera, Worth The Investment

The camera was bought for everyday use and convience. I based my puchase on the name Canon, the camera s features, and the reviews at this site. The image quality is great in all settings and occasions. The size of the camera is perfect in the pocket or on the belt. I set the camera in the Program mode where I have more control of it's features. The camera can be left in auto mode where it takes very nice photos. The image quality is wonderful, and the color balance looks very good, and when used in the auto mode the camera will choose the best setting using the proper ISO, Aperture, and Shutter settings.
Pros: controls
Cons: none

Many great points, focusing has a problem
on January 21, 2011

Let me say up front; bought the camera because of the good low-light capability, wider lens, size and durable feel. (would have liked RAW and avchd but there are always compromises)
Love the low light capability - does a great job. And pictures in good lighting are usually excellent. On those fronts in am very very pleased.
Major problem = focusing. There are 2 points where this crops up. 1. In good lighting, it seems that if I just push the button too quickly, the focusing isn't always accurate. I seem to need to 'pause' at the 1/2 way point and let it settle before I shoot. 2. In lower light, I have found many times that while a picture seems decently focused on the screen, once I download it to edit, it is obviously not in focus, not even close enough to be useful other than to post to Facebook for laughs.
I have had the camera since November and will be calling Canon to see what they recommend. My only solution so far is to be very very patient, and tell people to 'pose'. No candid shots. Photography is a nice hobby for me, so I know the basics very well. Wouldn't call myself a pro, but I am not an amateur either.
Pros: low light, wide lens, compact size
Cons: focusing in low light is bad too often, shots in low light with flash unfocused too often

Love this camera

I have only had this camera for about one month now, but I love it. It takes fantastic pictures and at this time, I have only been using the automatic settings. The low light pictures are amazing. I am still learning the features of this product and I am sure that once I am familiar with more of the manual features, I will be even more amazed. The size is just perfect. It fits right inside a pocket and is great to take anywhere. The LCD is so crisp and clear. I find the camera easy to use. The macro shots were clear and perfect. My only concern is that the side panel that you plug into the computer feels very delicate and I am concerned that it may snap off in time. I did extensive research before I bought this model and I am so glad that I choose this one. I am having a lot of fun with this camera and finding that I am using it more and taking it more places than the once I just replaced.
Pros: excellent image quality, great low light photos, excellent battery life, size, lcd is clear & crisp, easy to use
Cons: side panel seems too delicate

Fixing the video focus problems -sometimes-
on January 15, 2011

To fix the problem with autofocus when shooting video, you can just press the shutter half way and lock the focus with the dial -press left-.
It will simply not change the focus, something that for some videos can be a solution...
Only drawback so far: no CHDK available (yet), i.e. no RAW, no control over flash intensity and no Super Quality JPEG files.
The Low Light feature delivers outstanding performance in my opinion, 2.5MB only, but really worth it.
I hope it helps.
Pros: low light performance
Cons: no chdk yet

This Canon is Rock Solid!

I bought this camera to replace a competitors point & shoot camera that I was unhappy with and WOW, this Canon SD4000-IS is a great camera. It's ability to shoot great low-light shots without a flash is truly amazing for a point and shoot camera. On our recent trip to the beach I was able to take many really nice photos...mainly used the camera in the "Program" mode with the setting on (Vivid), the beach, ocean and nature shots were truly outstanding!! And then at night we took many shots in a downtown setting, without flash that were unlike any I have ever seen from a small point and shoot camera...simply amazing. Most of these pictures that came out great on this Canon would have been a disaster on my old camera that this one replaced.
Nice work Canon!
Pros: vivid color, amazing low-light capability, fast start up, beautiful build quality, solid construction

One great compact camera!

I have used this camera now for about 3 mo. I am delighted with the camera. I have several DSLR"s (all Canon) and this comes very to my DSLR. The compact size and the low light capabilities are just great. I would recomend this camera as a "first camera" as well as a 2nd camera for the Pro or Advanced amateur
