We run many of these in our servers so I figured that it was probably good enough for my home NAS.
The WD Red Pro drives have a great reputation so the Golds are probably overkill, but so far they've been running great - fast read/write times and noticeably faster than the "plain" reds.

After installing it, it creates "thumbing noise", when in idle mode.

Hello,
We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD Gold Hard disk drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.
Based on your concern, if the drive is behaving abnormal on the computer then it could be due to insufficient power supply to the drive for operation. To isolate the cause of the drive failure, it is recommended to connect the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer and check the drive for any damage or defect by following the information provided in the link below.
"How to check an internal drive for defects, problems, corruption, or a power issue": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15514
We recommend connecting the drive as secondary storage via SATA port to the computer, to test the health of the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

I just purchased my 12th gold drive. I have bought 8TB, 10TB, and 16TB drives throughout the years and have yet to have one fail. They are pricey, but can you really put a price on peace of mind?

Fast but makes clunking sounds, this is my 3rd Gold Class drive and while they have not failed me they sound like a broken piston when ever accessed. I expect it now but its loud and sounds disconcerting regardless.

Love it so far. With its long warranty, I have the confidence to trust this drive with my data. I purchased two and have them in a Sabrent JOB enclosure connected via USB 3.2.
As long as it works and delivers the rated speeds in the years to come, what's not to like? I gave it 5 stars, although if I wanted to quibble, I'd probably take away 1 star for the unusual noises it makes during operation. It's not particularly loud, however, so it doesn't bother me much.
