For years I have used the Hoover Max Extract and I upgraded to this model. WAY nicer than before. All the little things that bothered me previously are taken care of in this model. I had seen the marketing saying it felt like running a vacuum and found that hard to believe, but they were right! My thumb used to hurt from holding the switch and this model there is no switch to hold. I used to wonder if it was dispensing water or sucking it up, this model a word lights which one it is doing as it does it. After you finish you don't have a partial mixture of solution that has been watered down. You can easily change which hoover solution you are using, whether it is for carpet or hard floors. This model is made for carpet. My only hesitation in selecting it was I wanted it for both carpet and linoleum. I use it on my linoleum and it works fabulous! The linoleum floors dry as quickly as the previous model, which was made for that. Within about 10 minutes they are dry and ready to use. It is light and easy to manuever around with a very generous long cord. I am the kind of person that reads manuals from cover to cover before using the machine. However, on this unit I didn't read it at all. It is extremely user friendly! They have good clear labeling and reminders printed on the unit. The tanks are large and allow to cover a large area before needing to dump or refill them. Normally there are a few things on something that I am not the most thrilled about and wish were different, but I have yet to find any suggestions for improvement on this one. Shocking! My husband wasn't fond of spending the money to upgrade, but once it arrived and he saw how happy I was with it he didn't mind. I was so excited and found it so simple to use that I did the entire house floors instead of the few rooms I was originally after. We don't have pets so I can't say how it does with their messes. We host dinner parties and it was very helpful at getting up food spills. You can totally tell where the well traveled areas are and when all the dirt is up with this unit. The top casing is extremely clear and you can see the dirty water and dirt go past as it sucks it up. That makes it easy to know if you got it all or need to go over it a second time. I LOVE this new unit! I am VERY impressed!

I can't say enough GREAT things about this machine! I have shampooed my carpet twice in the last month and plan to continue that pattern. I have a cat and the SmartWash rids all cat issues from the carpet and leaves it smelling wonderful. It is easy to use and clean after using. I'm going to purchase a second one for my office.

I loved this vacuum for an entire year, happily cleaning the area rugs in our home several times each. I purchased it immediately after borrowing a friends rug vac, and though "Wow! What a difference it makes in the vibrancy and cleanliness of our antique rugs!" However, I made the mistake of using the hose attachment to clean that car seats recently, and since then the suction has never been the same. The dirty water chamber used to have 10x the amount of water and I fear the vacuum is leaving my rugs wetter than before.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi MissLew, thank you for reviewing the Hoover SmartWash Automatic Carpet Cleaner. We are here to help! We recommend checking to make sure your filter is clean of any built up debris or clogs. Turn your cleaner off and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Grab the dirty water tank handle and pull up to release and then remove the tank from the carpet cleaner base at an angle. Place on a flat surface and unlatch the dirty water tank lid to remove the top of the tank. Empty the tank and then rinse and wipe the filter clean. Be sure to allow it to air dry!
