I bought this for learning to sew and love it. It's great for a variety of projects and I got comfortable with it quickly taking a beginners class. My only reason for one star off is because it can be a little loud.

I have been sewing for years and decided to purchase a new computerized machine a little over a month ago..well this series is my second and it has greatly disappointed me. TWO SEWMATE 5400 IN TWO MONTHS. The first one I allowed my 13y/o daughter to stitch a garment for me. I wasn't sure if she did anything wrong to it so i just choked it up. so it's sitting in the corner waiting for me to haul it to a repair shop (when it's repaired I'm passing it on to her) Well I am on medical leave and needed something constructive to do so I got ANOTHER ONE. I did not even get to complete the garment I began working on today. After about 40 minutes of off and on sewing (stopping to iron, watching TV etc) my problems started. Within the 40 minutes! i ensured the bobbin was in correctly and machine was threaded...but broke two needles while sewing a light weight sweater. It seems to start acting up after I backstitched a few times. It's boxed up and going back! VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Love it. Very quick and easy to use. Especially like the bobbin winder...much faster. Only setback is getting into the machine when a thread is stuck between the threading mechanisms.

I would give it a 5, but I hate the botton hole maker. Because it never gives the right amount of tension. And the botton is horrible. U can't even do it with and ordinaty button, it has to be the one that came with my machine!! But, I sew everyday! I love it and so many idea's and patterns. I will say I am horrible at patterns. But, I have been making up my own as I go. Its works for me and I do really good. I always have my mom and my granny to help if I need assistance, or them to tell me something. But, I have made my daughters Halloween Costumes, Jem and the Holagrams. And one was Jem and the other was Stormer! But I love quilts and making house things. If u ever want to see the most beautiful and detailed work. U should meet and see all my grannys work and her quilts are so beautiful! One day I hope I am as good as her and my mom!!
