So disappointed

I’m returning this. After only 3 days, I’m getting code C4. I see no solutions on Singer’s website. YouTube has you tearing into the machine. I’m just making a toddlers apron. It’s going back but I’ll try it one more time. After that I’ll move on to another brand
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Very User Friendly Machine!

I bought the Sew Mate 5400 back in 2015 (I think?) and I use it ALL THE TIME. I've been sewing my entire life and I love how easy this machine makes everything. I own four Singer sewing machines dating from the early 1900s to mid-century to modern day machines, and I've personally put more miles on this one than the three others combined. I teach a sewing class and believe me when I say that even a child can use it. My youngest student is eleven and she was able to learn so much in her first 6 weeks, thanks to the technology this machine has.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Amazing stitch capabilities & easy to use!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this sewing machine as a backup as my other machine, which isn’t computerized, isn’t working properly, and I had some items that need repair. This sewing machine may very well become my go-to instead of my backup because it’s pretty neat & has features that I really like.
When I first got the machine, I did have a little trouble with it when I first cut it on. The needle broke right away and an error code, C-4, popped up on the screen. Unfortunately, needles do break from time to time anyway so it was nice that it comes with some extra. (With that said, it would be nice if it came with a manual instead of having to go online to figure out what was wrong.) Fortunately, I already know a little bit about electric sewing machines and was able to determine it was the casing that the bobbin goes in was misaligned inside the machine. Once I took that out and got it put back in place properly, it worked great! I’m glad it comes with a quick start diagram to properly thread and use the bobbin winder.
It is about as loud as I expected for an electronic machine, and I love that it comes with some extra pieces, such as the extra bobbins for thread, and a couple of different presser foot pieces and the button hole maker piece. It’s interesting that it makes 4 different kinds of button holes, which is nice if you are working on a garment that requires them. It also has the nice storage compartment, which can easily be removed by hooking your finger around the piece on the back side of the compartment to pull it straight out. Then, you can easily slip pieces such as a pant leg that needs hemming on the machine, and the cuff fits without having to hold the fabric at a funny angle while sewing.
It’s amazing how many types of stitches can be used, and some look like embroidery. I will say, you might want to practice on a piece of scrap fabric so you know how a stitch will look before using it on whatever project you are working on. When it looks right, it’s absolutely beautiful! When you change stitches, it’s easy, just with the touch of a button or 2.
I know a lot of machines now have an automatic threader, but that is one option on the machine I am not crazy about as I cant get the hang of it, and end up threading by hand. Once that is done, though, when you select your stitch, this machine is amazing in how with each stitch, the length and width of each individual stitch is already set so you don’t have to figure it out, and it is interesting seeing the needle move on the machine according to each stitch’s specifications.
Overall, I would say this is a great machine & I hope to get many years of use out of it!

Super simple & quiet!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] SINGER 5400 Sew Mate Computerized Sewing Machine is super quiet sewing machine. It has 60 stitch settings, 4 button holes Glides smoothly and threads easily with the automatic threader.
I let my 12 year old daughter use it without giving her instructions (even though there’s an option to see online videos with instructions, step-by-step) and she was able to easily catch on so it is a beginners level machine super easy to use.
I even tested a few pieces of fabric in layers and no issues. What I really love though is the automatic stitch length, takes the guess work out of it and even knowing how to sew myself - sometimes it could take time to figure out the correct length. So it’s nice to have this automatic option.
I did notice that when using any other thread other than cotton it tends to break thread at times. Luckily I use only cotton, but wanted others to know that as well and this is the only reason I took away a star.
Overall I love the machine, it’s my first “computerized” machine.
