Best sewing machine

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is by far the best sewing machine I have ever had. It's so easy to use. It comes with a quick start guide to help. Link to videos to also help. This sewing machine has 60 built-in stitches, four styles of button holes, and automatic needle threader. I'm so impressed with this wonderful machine. It even has the automatic stitch length and width so you have the right stitch every time. It's also beautiful to look at. It comes with free accessories to get you started. I love the dust cover it comes with . This is just an amazing machine. I'm so very happy to have this in my life.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Easy to Use and Does the Job

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I can't sew. I mean, I can do the basics like sew a button back on by hand, but I've never owned a sewing machine or done much else. I don't have any designs on becoming a tailor, but I wanted something so that I could do more than just buttons - hem a pair of pants, fix rips, put on a patch, maybe even replace a zipper - just kidding, I'll leave the zippers to the pros. So having a basic machine makes sense, and this does the job that I need it to do. There are machines that can do much more, are more powerful and more expensive, but that's way beyond anything I'll ever want or need. This is a good choice for something that can do the essentials. Like everything else, you'll need to get used to using the machine vs. a needle and thread, but I didn't find it all that difficult to adjust.
I would recommend this to a friend!

See Mate! Plug and play

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m not handstitching anymore. This sewing machine is very much plug-and-play. It has pictures to decide which stitch she would like with a simple touch of a button. It also has the direction to pull the thread so you can sew I do like the fact that it also comes with a nice dust cover. It keeps a little kids fingers where they don’t belong, this will make life so much easier and it’s all self-explanatory and I like the lightweight foot pedal which if you attach it to the table leg you can also use your knee instead of your foot. I do like that I will be getting ours of good use out of this.

Don't buy this.

Makes me miss my old machine. I just bought it and I have gone over and over the instructions. They are easy enough to follow. But the machine is horrible! It won't even stitch one inch without jamming and giving me a C-4 error. I have gone through it again and again. I've spent hours threading, re-threading, changing the bobbin, etc. But it continues to jam. I miss my 30 year old machine!

Good For A Beginner

Compared to the Singer I had for the past 20 years, this sewing machine has more bells and whistles for what I had paid for the other one at the same price. I don't know what it is with quality these days though, as the plastic casing with the Sew Mate, is very cheap-- like a toy. With that said, I did manage to do a first project with it, before having the fabric get sucked through the feed dog, with the next. No matter what I did, the thread ended up winding itself around the bobbin casing underneath, until I finally gave up, and rewound another bobbin-- which seemed to work just fine. The machine isn't really meant to go fast, hence why I say it's good for a beginner. The set thread set up is very easy. The oil that another reviewer mentioned, was just from the factory, as once you get it through a minute or so, it's gone. The needle hasn't broken on mine, because (as stated), this machine isn't supposed to go through at warp speed. Another plus, are the stitch settings that are fun to mess around with. (Just don't pull the fabric, as the slightest tug will actually stretch the stitches, whereas, in a regular machine, it's not as touchy.) So for the money and the quality, I'll say it does the job.

instruction manual

I haven't used the machine yet, so another review is coming. The instruction manual is driving me crazy though. Why didn't Singer put the French instructions together, and the Spanish instructions together, so that you don't have to weed thru all of that to read how to use the machine in English? It's taking twice as long to go thru the manual, trying to skip over extra languages I don't understand. Usually, a manufacturer will print those in such a way that you can just tear the other languages off and keep what you need. I hate the manual.

Skips Stitches

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was so excited to get the SINGER - Sew Mate™ 5400 Sewing Machine, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment and frustration.
Pros - Lightweight and compact. Over 50 different stitch styles.
Cons - Needs to have an actual manual in the box. The QR code I scanned leads to a video explaining the machine but not how to thread the bobbin or machine. I had to search the internet for a useful video. Singer should take into consideration that some people may not have the internet or a smartphone to scan the QR code.
When it came to threading the machine, I couldn’t lift the needle by turning the hand wheel and then the needle guide fell out. I’m guessing it was twisted when I got it.
The built in needle threader is not at all helpful for me because it doesn’t work.
When sewing, my thread kept breaking, first the upper thread and then the bobbin thread.
The SINGER - Sew Mate™ 5400 Sewing Machine makes a weird metal grinding noise every single time I turn it on.
The bobbin keeps jamming up, my fabric rips, and the stitches are constantly loose or skipped all together.
Not sure if it’s built to do this or not, but the machine keeps sewing for several stitches when I lift my foot off the pedal. I don’t want it to do that, but I don’t know how to stop it from happening.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great first machine

I bought this to replace a very old "home eco" style machine I bought 18 years ago. I was looking to start sewing again and maybe do more than the occasional hem or repair. I chose this one for several reasons: price Walmart had it on sale at the time for 120. computer/electronic settings... I had always on the old machine had trouble with doing even straight stitches on any fabric because it was all manual settings and I was not that great. And the last main reason was I wanted to expand beyond straight stitches for hems etc... and this machine offers 60 built in pre programed stitches. And yes while the granny apple green is a bit much for color I love it.
